My cell phone rang as I was approaching Chris’s condo that evening. Seeing that Alex was the caller prompted me to turn the ringer off before sliding the phone into my jacket pocket. The last thing I needed was to field calls from Alex while I was with Chris. I could deal with only one man at a time. Being back at the condo felt weird. The doorman remembered me and asked how I was doing. We chatted for a few minutes before he buzzed me in. Apparently, Chris had already informed the front desk staff that I’d be coming. During the elevator ride, I considered backing out of this impromptu visit and heading home instead. I didn’t owe Chris anything and I wasn’t keen on him summoning me to see him either.
