Chapter 2
I spent the rest of the weekend settling into my new (old) surroundings. After enjoying the luxurious space of Chris’s king-sized bed, I was back to my old full-sized bed complete with its overly soft pillow-top mattress. My mother had cleared her things out of my old closet and dresser so I had room for my own clothes and shoes. Since the bulk of my personal items had gone into storage, I didn’t have much to unpack.
My mother poked her head in to remind me that I needed to hang a visitor’s pass in my car window so I wouldn’t be ticketed until I had a chance to get my car registered in Evanston. “I don’t think the meter maids come by on the weekends, but you’ll definitely need that pass on Monday or you’ll get a ticket.”
Before exiting, she told me there was a visitor’s pass in the kitchen drawer near the refrigerator that I could use. The last thing I needed was yet another expense attached to my already expensive car and I knew Evanston’s finest would boot my car if I racked up too many parking violations.
I considered just selling the Audi and taking what I could get for it. All I really needed was enough to pay off the remainder of the loan so I wouldn’t be saddled with the monthly payments anymore. With that financial burden removed, I’d be able to put more money aside for myself. Besides, I didn’t need a car to get around. I could go back to catching the L on a regular basis or using my mother’s car. Getting rid of the Audi made a lot of sense, but I wasn’t quite ready to give it up yet. Maybe a few weeks of living with my mother would change that.
