Chapter 8: The Awakening Flame

841 Words
The forest fell into a deadly silence. Verra stood at the center of her warriors as Kael Blackfang emerged from the shadows . Behind him, dozens of Geneva's elite hunters revealed themselves. Weapons gleamed beneath the moonlight. The resistance warriors immediately drew their swords. Kael's cold eyes never left Verra. For years he had searched for the lost heir. Now she stood before him. Alive. Defiant. Beautiful. And dangerous. "You've caused my Alpha a great deal of trouble, Princess," Kael said calmly. Verra slowly unsheathed her sword. "I'm not going back." Kael smiled. "I wasn't ordered to bring you back." His silver eyes darkened. "I was ordered to kill you." The hunters charged. The forest exploded into chaos. Steel clashed. Arrows flew. Warriors screamed. Verra rushed forward. Her sword flashed through the darkness. One hunter fell. Then another. And another. She moved like a storm among them. Fast. Precise. Deadly. But Kael was different. He didn't move. He simply watched. Studying her. Analyzing every strike. Every movement. Every weakness. Finally, he stepped forward. The ground beneath him cracked. His Alpha aura exploded outward. The pressure alone forced several resistance warriors to their knees. Verra's eyes widened. Kael wasn't just an assassin. He was an Alpha-level warrior. Their swords collided. BOOM! The impact shook the forest. Both were thrown backward. Kael smiled. "Interesting." Verra attacked again. Their blades became silver streaks beneath the moonlight. Neither gained an advantage. Neither backed down. Then Kael suddenly shifted. CRACK! Bones snapped. Muscles expanded. Within seconds, a massive black wolf stood before her. Twice the size of ordinary wolves. Eyes glowing like silver fire. The Shadow Wolf. The beast responsible for countless deaths. The resistance warriors looked terrified. Even Rowan felt fear. Because everyone knew Kael's reputation. No one survived fighting him. No one. Kael lunged. Verra barely avoided his jaws. His claws tore through a nearby tree. The ancient trunk collapsed instantly. "Lady Thea!" Rowan shouted. But Kael attacked again. And again. And again. Verra found herself being pushed back. Her breathing became ragged. Blood dripped from a cut on her shoulder. Kael noticed. Predators always noticed weakness. "You've disappointed me." The giant wolf circled her. "I expected more from Theodore's daughter." The mention of her father ignited something inside her. The memory of Theodore. The memory of running. Hiding. Losing everything. The memory of Geneva's cruelty. And suddenly— Her wolf roared. Not in anger. In awakening. A strange heat surged through her body. The earth trembled. The wind howled violently. Everyone froze. Even Kael stepped back. "What..." Verra gasped. Pain exploded through her veins. Golden light erupted from beneath her feet. The air became charged with energy. CRACK! Lightning flashed across the sky. A pillar of fire suddenly burst around her. The resistance warriors stared in disbelief. Rowan's eyes widened. "No..." The ancient stories. The forgotten prophecy. The bloodline power. The gift of the True Luna. "It can't be..." Verra lifted her head. Her silver eyes had transformed. Golden flames burned within them. Fire danced around her body. Lightning crackled across her skin. Power surged through the forest. Raw. Ancient. Terrifying. Kael's confident expression disappeared for the first time. Fear entered his eyes. Because he recognized the power. A power believed extinct. "The Dragon Storm..." Rowan whispered. The legendary ability possessed only by the original rulers of Dragon Fire Pack. The power to command both fire and lightning. The power of kings and queens. The power Geneva had spent years trying to erase. Verra raised her hand. A sphere of fire appeared instantly. Lightning spiraled around it. The forest shook. Kael's instincts screamed danger. For the first time in years— He retreated. The fireball launched forward. BOOM!!! The explosion lit the entire mountain range. Trees shattered. The ground cracked. Hunters were thrown in every direction. Some never stood again. Kael barely escaped. His body slammed against a boulder. Blood dripped from his forehead. He stared at Verra in disbelief. Not because she defeated him. But because he now understood why Geneva feared her. She wasn't merely Theodore's daughter. She wasn't merely the rightful heir. She was something far more dangerous. The True Luna of Prophecy. Miles away... Inside Storm Wind territory... Daven suddenly stopped walking. His wolf howled inside him. A strange energy rippled through the mate bond. Fire. Lightning. Pain. Fear. And Verra. His chest tightened. His heart raced. He didn't understand why. But he knew one thing. She was in danger. Without hesitation, Daven shifted into his wolf form. A massive silver wolf emerged beneath the moonlight. Then he ran. Straight toward the northern border. Straight toward fate. Back in the forest, Verra's power slowly faded. The flames vanished. The lightning disappeared. Exhaustion immediately hit her. She nearly collapsed. Rowan caught her. "We need to leave. Now." Verra nodded weakly. Before losing consciousness, she looked toward the distant horizon. Toward Storm Wind territory. Toward Daven. Unaware that he was already racing toward her. And that destiny was preparing another encounter. One that neither of them would be able to avoid.
