SOPHIA When the first rays of the sun filter through the curtains, I breathe a sigh of relief. With eyelids drooping, I know I need sleep but that can’t be told to my racing heart or my teary eyes. Abdallah lay next to me, a huge distance away. By the stiffness of his shoulders as he faces the other side I can’t tell if he’s asleep or not. Most probably the latter. I face the other side as well and the bed makes this creaking sound which can barely be heard over the rush of blood in my ears. I think I might be choking with the emotions gathering up and up, thrashing and begging to be let free. And so I do. I let the darkness out and flees as if it had been waiting too long to be let out.
