“Brother?”
“Molly.” He said and turned to see his sister. Maille did not smile at his choice of name. He was dressed in gold and white and he wore a crown that was bright and had many gems in it. He too had wings now, they were huge and clear but they sparkled.
“What are you doing here?”
“I am here Molly, to let you know-”
“Her name is not Molly, you will address her with her real name or your grace.” Morale sapped.
“Yes, your highness. Your grace, I am here to let you know that our mother has fallen ill.”
“Will she survive?”
“I do not know. If she was given some of her glamour she could become strong enough to fight the illness.”
“No., “ Maille said. She did not even look at her father to know the correct answer. Her mother must never come into her glamour again.
“You condemn your mother to death.”
“She is no longer welcome here. I will not save the life of a traitor. She betrayed this kingdom and our people. Her glamour will stay here where it is safe and protected. Now if that is all you came here for then you may leave my presence.” Maille joined her father on her throne and looked down on her brother. These were her people now, she came to understand that her family ties with her mother would become strained if not severed when she could not accept that her daughter was a fairy and doing well. Her brother snarled at her father and spoke once more.
“Maille you betray your mother, she needs you. After your birth, she was stripped of her wings and glamour. She did it for you. Give her her glamour before she dies. Save her life.” He snapped.
“Oh brother, I do not know what spell she has you under. Your first priority should be your people, not your mother who should not really have contact with us anyways. Why, if she needs glamour, why not give her yours?”
“She needs her shadow glamour. That alone will help her heal.”
“Brother. Let her go. I will not give her her glamour. If she is ill she will either fight through it or she will die. She betrayed your father as well.”
“My father is ruthless and unforgiving. He deserved her actions. He drove her to it. He made her do it.”
“Brother, what are you talking about? She chose to do what she did. Be gone. I do not think you will leave unless I tell you to. Go. Go back to her or the Seelie court and live your life.”
“Is this goodbye?”
“Yes. You have chosen and we are not it.Go.” Her brother stormed out of the throne room and maille motioned for a guard to approach her.
“Yes your grace?”
“Follow him. Make sure he leaves. We do not need him poking around.”
“Yes your grace.” He left the room and Maille held her head in her hands. The weight of what she just did weighing down on her.”
“You did well. I can not say whether you made the right choice or not but you held to your decision. Thank you for protecting your mother’s glamour.” Mail heaved a sigh and sat up straight again and tried to look regal but her exhaustion showed on her face.
“Thank you, father. My loyalty will forever be with my kingdom. Even if you should choose to betray this court, I will stand against you.”
“That is good to hear. You have really grown since you came to live with us.”
“Thank you, father. I have come to feel at home here and I feel accepted by the court.”
“That is good. Now, have you any plans?”
“I wanted to go back to the tower and finish cleaning.”
“Is that what you have been doing? I will send people up to clean for you, you need not do it. It will be done by dinner.”
‘Thank you, father. I will see you at dinner then.” Maille hopped down and left the room. The king shook his head and smiled. She was off to see Krad again, he just knew it.
Maille found Krad back in the courtyard and a small creature was sitting on his shoulders. He was feeding it something but she could not see what.
“Krad?” She called from the door, not wanting to surprise him with a reptile on his shoulder.
“Yes, Maille?”
“Is that your familiar?”
“Yes, his name is Draco.”
“He is beautiful.” His scales were a deep emerald green and his stomach was bright gold. There were no spikes on his back or tail, it was smooth from nose to the tip of his tail.
“Thank you.”
“Krad, have you ever done any magic besides shadow magick?”
“Hmmm, no, not that I know of, why?” He seemed in thought as if trying to figure out where she was going.
“Because I think that although we are better at certain magick, there is nothing stopping us from broadening our minds. I have shadow fairy wings and lunar fairy stars on my wings. If I can have two different magicks in my wings, that means I could do more than one. If you tried a new form of magick, would it change your wings? Would it be possible?”
“I do not know, your grace, you are the first to have this type of wings.”
“Will you help me?”
“Of course..”
“You are not saying that because you want to win me over are you?”
“I delve into shadow magick, if I wanted your heart, I would have it.” He said quietly. Maille’s eyes snapped up to look at his and there was nothing but the truth in his words, which caused her to shudder. He was dangerous. No wonder her father was cautious.
“Well, what magic did you want to study?”
“To be honest I would say Lunar magick and not for the reason you think. I wish to see my future. I want to be able to see the future of my family and my children. To see if their future is bright or one in shadows forever. “
“yOu could ask a lunar fairy to look.”
“I want to see it with my own eyes.”
“Okay, well, after dinner I am going up to the tower where they used to work if you would like to come along.”
“I have always wanted in there.” Krad slid her a smile, one that reached his eyes. Maille had to fight the urge to reach out and touch his face, just to feel his skin. Instead, she turned and left him in the courtyard staring after her. She sought out Ivy and found her in the library, straightening books.
“Ivy.”
“Maille, how are you?”
“FIne. I was just talking to Krad and we have a little experiment we wish to try.”
“Krad? The shadow fairy?”
“Yes, you do not have a problem with that, do you?”
“He is a shadow fairy.”
“And so am I Ivy. I am a shadow fairy. Why does that matter so much?”
“Shadow fairies are capable of great darkness Maille. He could be using you.”
“I could be using anyone. Ivy, why are you like this?”
“Shadow fairies took over the court here, they did not always rule. They took over and they slaughtered the family that ruled. The first ruling family was a family of lunar fairies. This shadow fairy group came in and killed the family, all except for the daughter. One of them took her as his bride. They ruled from then on. They are bad.”
“Is that why you came here? Because my mother moved to the Seelie court? She is a shadow fairy.”
“I was born in the Seelie court but my parents came from here. When the shadow fairies took over they left and when one crossed over into our blessed court I moved back here and then you turned out like your mother. I thought you would embrace the lunar fairy way, but you turned to shadow magick. I tried so hard to turn you the right way, but now I know you can not be trusted to rule, you certainly can not rule with that monster by your side.” Ivy’s voice was rising as she spoke. Several people glanced over, now uncertain of what to do.
“Ivy, what are you saying? Will you go against me? That is treason.”
“What your family did was treason. What you are doing is disgusting. Mixing magicks, you are a monster, a freak.”
“Ivy, Stop it!” Maille shouted. A couple of guards ran in at her outburst. Ivy looked around and saw she had an audience and so she swept from the room.
“Mark my words Shadow fairy, you will pay for the sins of your fathers.” Her words came out as a more than a threat, it was a promise, a vow.
