8. Gaueko

"This can't be the truth!" whispered Atropos, seeing Gaueko standing in the shadows. She couldn't believe her own eyes. The creature from old legends was now standing in front of her. Those creatures shouldn't exist anymore. "Oh, believe me, my dear, it is more than real!" said Nyx to her with a bright smile. "I hope you finally understand that you never have a chance to overcome me! When you understand it, I hope you will take care of Lachesis as we planned, or else I wouldn't hesitate to satisfy my friend's thirst for a fresh God's flesh!" Atropos nodded, knowing that this time her mother had won. Nyx smiled even more satisfied with Atropos's reaction, and she was going to leave when she suddenly stopped and, behind her shoulder, said to Atropos: "You might be the Fate Goddess, but you finally know that you will never be worth it!" And with those words, she left, and Gaueko disappeared with her. As soon as Atropos was alone, her legs gave up, and she fell. She hugged her knees, hoping that it would help stop the shaking in her body, but she knew that she had to calm down first. Suddenly, Atropos remembered the vision where she saw everyone's death, and she started shaking even more because now she started believing that this time might be impossible for her to change her fate. Seeing a living Gaueko changed everything. As a child, Atropos learned that light was separated from the darkness in the beginning. On the same day, the first Gods were born. Chaos was born from the light, and Gaueko was raised from the darkness. They lived together for a long time, and together they ruled the world, but everything had changed when Gaueko's greed started swallowing everything alive. Darkness rose, and soon it was so powerful that even Chaos couldn't stop it anymore. Chaos had to create three almighty Gods: the wide-bosomed Gaea (Earth), Tartarus (the Underworld), and Eros (Love), the fairest among the deathless gods, to help him stop the Gaueko. Almost the whole world was destroyed when they tried to stop Gaueko, but they could stop darkness thanks to Chaos's sacrifice. The Legend said that Chaos sacrificed himself to distract Gaueko. When he was swallowing Chaos's soul, those Gods trapped Gaueko. They used their power, and its soul was scattered into thousands of pieces to never be able to be reborn again. Today she saw Gaueko with her own eyes, and she was never scared more than at that time. It appeared just from the shadows. Its body had an almost human form but was twice as big as a human. She couldn't clearly see its face, but she saw its dead eyes glowing in the darkness, trying to hypnotize her. Even when she looked only for a short moment at those eyes, she still felt like Gauekos's eyes were piercing through her soul, leaving only emptiness. She clearly felt this ancient creature's power overwhelmed her, and she realized that she alone wouldn't have a chance against it if it came to fighting. She didn't understand how Gaueko might have been alive or what her mother did when Gaueko was under her influence, but those questions should have to wait because her sister's life was in great danger. Nyx was determined to use Gaueko to get rid of Lachesis when Atropos wouldn't do what she wanted from her, and Atropos wouldn't ever allow that monster to come closer to her sister. She clenched her fists, and she stood up. It was time to be strong and bait her sister out. Knowing that the time had come, she went to Lachesis's room. She knocked on her sister's door, but she slowly opened the door after a long time when there was no response, but Lachesis's room was empty. She was gone. Atropos sighed. She sat on her sister's bed so she could wait for her. After a while, when her eyes started to close, she realized that her sister might not come, so she decided to write her a letter: "Sorry, Lach! I shouldn't enter your room without your permission, but I waited for you for too long in front of your door. When I found out that you were not there, I decided to leave you a letter because I must talk to you as soon as possible. Since Clo left us, we didn't have much time to speak together, but there is something that you need to know. Please find me as soon as possible because I might be in danger. I will wait for you in my room. Your sister A." When she was done, she left the letter on her sister's bed, and she left. She knew that Lachesis would come to find her, but she had to inform Nyx before because her plan had already started. —————————————————— The Atropos's room in the Crystal Palace … Atropos heard knocking on her door. She looked at the corner of her room where Nyx was hiding. She hoped that her mother would keep her promise and she wouldn't call for her new friend Gaueko. When her sister knocked once again, Atropos responded: "I am waiting for you." Her sister didn't need anything else. In a second, she was already in the room, running towards Atropos. She looked so happy that Atropos had to look to the other side. Suddenly, Lachesis stopped, and Atropos saw the panic in her sister's eyes. She stepped forward, but she remembered that Nyx was watching her, and she stopped. Instead of helping her sister, Atropos just watched her till she saw how Lachesis's eyes went wide when she realized that Atropos had betrayed her. Atropos will never forget how her sister's eyes looked up when she found the truth, yet she knew she had to hurt her even more. Still looking into Lachesis's eyes, she asked: "Are you sure that the poison will not hurt her?" Said Atropos to someone behind her. "Oh, Atropos, you should calm down! She will be fine. You know that I wouldn't use anything that would harm her. After all, she is the flesh of my flesh. She is my daughter!" When Atropos heard her mother's sweet lies, she clenched her fists. She wanted to tell her that she didn't have to pretend anymore, but suddenly Atropos saw how Lachesis's legs got numbed, and she fell. She couldn't see her sister so weak, so she moved forward to help her, but Nyx stepped in her way. Nyx's eyes warned her, and Atropos knew that she had to play till the end. Atropos felt tears in her eyes. She gulped down her tears, and with a shaking voice, she asked as her mother wished: "Are you sure that she would just take her power?!" "Yes! This is exactly what she promised me. After she seals Lachesis's power, she will clear her memories and let her live as a mere human. She wouldn't remember anything from her previous life, and now please, could you stop asking? I don't think it is the right time to ask when she is waiting. You know how dangerous she could be when we let her wait too long." Atropos saw the pain in Lachesis's eyes, and she knew that she broke her sister's heart when she realized that her beloved sister had taken Nyx's side, craving to steal her power. At that moment, Lachesis gave up. Seeing her sister losing her power and feeling in such pain was crucial for Atropos. She was heartbroken as well, but the only thing she could say to her sister was to apologize: "I am sorry, Lach!" Atropos wasn't sure that Lachesis had heard her last words because she had passed out. When she saw that Lachesis fell unconscious, she pushed her mother away. She couldn't pretend anymore. She took her sister's body in her arms, trying to protect her, but Nyx just smiled and said: "It is too late to change your mind, my dear! You won't stop me anymore!" Atropos was prepared to use all her power to protect Lachesis no matter what, but suddenly she felt weird. Her hands were heavy, and she was sleepy. Atropos looked at her mother, but she knew it was already too late. Her eyes closed, and she fell on her sister's body. Her last thoughts belonged to Nyx. She realized that she underestimated Nyx, but it was too late. Nyx won.
