As soon as the door was closed, Atropos fell onto her bed. Her heart was aching when her eyes caught shining stars on the ceiling. She hardly believed that she had agreed to dirt her hands. When she saw what would happen to Lachesis, she wasn't sure she would be able to do it anymore. She wondered if her mother's words were true and if she was really a heartless monster like Nyx.
Atropos sighed, knowing there was no other way. She was sure that Nyx would find a way to get rid of Lachesis even without her. After all, Nyx was able to manipulate everything. Even Clotho was sent to the Earth because of her mother's manipulation, but luckily, Atropos was wise enough to take some steps to protect her sister.
She clenched her fists and closed her eyes. She wished there was a way to protect Lachesis, but there was none. She had to betray her sister, or she wouldn't find who her mother worked with.
Her only hope was that Lachesis would forgive her at once.
Suddenly, her thoughts were interrupted when someone knocked on her door. Atropos looked at the door, wondering who it could be. Before she could stand up from her bed, the door had opened, and her sister Lachesis entered the room.
"Atri, can I talk to you for a moment?" asked Lachesis when she saw Atropos chilling on her bed.
Atropos hid her surprise, and she quickly nodded. She stood up and showed Lachesis that she could sit beside her.
"Well, I …. You know……."
Lachesis sighed and stopped. She looked at Atropos's ceiling and started again:
"I always admire Hephaistos's work, especially what he did in your room. I know how much you liked the night sky on the Earth and that you missed our home, but I hope you will give Nivalis at least a chance. I think you will find how beautiful this new planet is."
Atropos raised her eyebrows. She wondered what this all was about because she knew that Lachesis never liked small talk. Atropos was asking her sister if there was something in her heart that she had come to her, but Lachesis said:
"I came to say goodbye. You know that I have to go back to Earth."
Atropos held her breath and looked at Lachesis. When she saw her sister's eyes full of tears, she clenched her fists and quickly nodded. It wasn't possible to forget it when Atropos knew that Lachesis wouldn't be the one that would be chosen, but she couldn't say a word.
"I know that I wasn't the best sister, but I wanted to tell you that I would miss you. You know, just in case."
When Lachesis hugged her, Atropos had to bite her own tongue, or else she wasn't sure that she wouldn't relieve everything to her sister. It was hard to stay silent in a situation when Lachesis was showing her heart to her. Especially when she knew how much Lachesis hated Earth. Knowing that she had to be strong, she closed her eyes, but her sister's warmth almost immediately embraced her.
She slightly pushed her sister's hands, but Lachesis looked at her, surprised and suspiciously. She knew that she had to end this moment as soon as possible, or it wouldn't end well. To save the situation, Atropos quickly smiled and took Lachesis's hands into herself, and said:
"I will miss you too. You know that you don't have to be worried because I will look after you, do you?"
Lachesis looked at their hands. After a while, she nodded, and Atropos finally breathed out. When Atropos looked back into Lachesis's eyes, suspicion was gone, and Atropos saw only how touched her sister was by her words. It was hard seeing her sister being deceived by her, so she let her hands be, and she quickly stood up from her bed, saying:
"Well, there are still things that I have to take care of before you leave us, so if you don't have anything else, you should better go."
Atropos saw how Lachesis froze for a second after her words, and she lowered her head quietly, saying:
"No, there is nothing else."
Atropos clenched her teeth because she knew that her last words hurt her sister, but she knew she had to do it because there was no time to be weak. Not after she heard what her mother had done. After Lachesis closed the door, Atropos felt tears in her eyes, but she quickly whipped them, remembering that she had to become the same monster if she wanted to win over her mother.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
A few days later, in the Hall of Glory in the Crystal Palace of Nivalis.
…
Atropos looked at her sisters. Today was a big day for them, and everyone was well prepared. Her sisters looked beautiful in their dresses, and Atropos's legs started shaking. She was the only one that stepped out when she simply took jeans instead of a beautiful dress. It wasn't a good idea because Nyx's eyes were killing her, but it was satisfying to see her mother being furious.
Totally ignoring her, she smiled, and she stood right next to her sisters, and she looked at Hermes, the God of Travel that came to announce as many times as before who of them would be the next going back to Earth. Atropos was barely listening to him, but when he announced Clotho's name once again, Atropos saw satisfaction on Nyx's face. Her mother's plan went smoothly, and Atropos suddenly felt like vomiting.
As soon as Hermes was done with his announcement, Atropos wanted to disappear, but Clotho's hand stopped her right after a few steps. Atropos looked into her sister's eyes because she wanted to know why Clotho stopped her. Instead of some answer, Clotho shook her head and looked to the side. When Atropos followed her sight, she saw that her sister had saved her life. The ceremony apparently wasn't over because Nyx didn't say her last words. Atropos sighed and slightly touched Clotho's hand, showing her gratefulness.
Hermes was done with his announcement, but Nyx replaced him, and it looked like she had a lot to say. Atropos didn't listen to her mother's speech because she knew that it was never worth it, so she was just counting till she would be able to sneak away.
As soon as Nyx was done, Atropos wanted to disappear, but Nyx appeared in front of her, arguing with someone. It was Atropos's father, Erebos. Luckily, they didn't notice her. Atropos didn't hear the reason for their arguing, but she saw how angry Nyx got after her father's words, and she smiled. She couldn't help it. When she saw Nyx angry, she had to smile.
Suddenly, her sight caught Clotho standing behind them. Her sister's eyes were pleading with her to help. Atropos thought she would just ignore her, but she knew it was the last thing she could do for her, even when she had to sacrifice herself. Atropos sighed and stepped forward. Almost immediately, her mother's eyes found her and pierced her in the place.
"Atropos, can you tell me why you are wearing this?" asked Nyx fiercely.
Atropos froze but said nothing till Clotho used the situation and took Erebos away. When they were finally gone, she looked at Nyx, and she smiled at her, saying:
"Better as nothing, don't you think, mother?"
Atropos knew that provoking Nyx wouldn't end well, but at the same time, she knew that Nyx wouldn't dare to do anything in front of so many witnesses, so she couldn't do anything else. When Nyx got pale, Atropos enjoyed it, but when she saw her killing sight, she thought that maybe she had gotten too far.
"You are nothing else than a rude and spoiled brat! I am ashamed to have a daughter like you! Go get change yourself immediately!" shrieked Nyx. It was the first time that Nyx raised her voice in front of someone. When the Gods and Goddesses heard how angry Nyx got, they froze, and everyone's sight turned to Atropos.
Suddenly she felt like she was suffocating seeing everyone's pitiful sight. Then they realized what she was wearing, and their sight changed to discussion. Not embarrassing herself more, she turned back and ran away. She knew that Nyx would be waiting for her to change and come back, but the last thing she wanted was to pretend to have fun at the farewell party after such embarrassment.
She thought that she would embarrass Nyx by wearing jeans for the ceremony, but in the end, her mother won again, and the only person who was embarrassed was Atropos.
