Not Another Girl

780 Words
The first thing Ella Johnson noticed when she stepped off the elevator was how cold the floor felt beneath her heels. The 29th floor of Kane Dominion Group was sleek, spotless, and intimidating. Glass walls, dark wood, chrome fixtures—everything screamed power. People walked fast, phones to their ears, eyes sharp. Everyone looked like they belonged. Ella felt like she didn’t. She clutched her folder tighter to her chest and walked slowly toward the assistant station. Her hair was pulled back neatly. No makeup, just lip gloss. She didn’t dress to impress—just to survive. And she had one goal: keep this job, stay invisible, and avoid drama. But trouble didn’t need her attention. It found her first. --- Upstairs, Adrian Kane was already watching her. His office had a full view of the floor below. Tinted glass. No one could see in, but he saw everything. Her. That slow, unsure walk. The way her skirt hugged her hips without trying. How she bit her bottom lip when she got nervous. She wasn’t like the others—not flashy, not fake, not flirting. That intrigued him. And Adrian Kane didn’t like to be intrigued. “Who’s the new girl?” he asked without turning, sipping black coffee. His executive manager, Brent, checked the iPad. “Ella Johnson. New executive assistant. Hired by HR yesterday. Quiet background. No drama.” Adrian smiled. Challenge accepted. --- 10:15 AM. Ella stood at the reception desk when she heard her name. “Miss Johnson?” She turned. A man in a dark navy suit, clipboard in hand. “Mr. Kane will see you now.” Her stomach flipped. Already? She followed the man up a glass staircase, through a private hallway, and into a large office with floor-to-ceiling windows. The city glowed behind him like something out of a movie. And there he was. Adrian Kane. Taller than she expected. Built like a god. Jet-black hair, a strong jaw, sharp cheekbones. No smile. No warmth. He looked at her like she was already naked. “Ella Johnson,” he said, voice smooth and low. “Come in.” She swallowed hard and stepped forward. He didn’t shake her hand. Didn’t offer a seat. Just stared. “You’re not what I expected.” She blinked. “Excuse me?” “You’re… normal.” She frowned slightly. “I hope that’s not a problem, sir.” His smirk was slow, dangerous. “No. It’s… refreshing.” Finally, he gestured to a chair. She sat, legs crossed tightly. “Why do you want to work here?” he asked, leaning back, watching her like a predator with time. Ella kept her voice steady. “Because I’m good at my job. And I need it.” “Not because of me?” he teased, eyes burning into her. “No offense, Mr. Kane. But I’m not here to sleep with my boss.” There was silence. Then he laughed. A low, rich, amused laugh that made her chest tighten. “Interesting answer,” he said. “Most girls wouldn’t dare say that.” “I’m not most girls.” “That’s what they all say before they beg.” Her face flushed. “This interview is over,” she said, standing. “Sit down,” he ordered, his tone suddenly deeper. Commanding. Cold. She sat—without meaning to. What the hell was that? He stood, slowly walking around the desk toward her. He leaned against the edge, arms crossed, looking down at her. “Let’s get one thing clear,” he said softly. “You’ll hear rumors. About me. Women. s*x. Control. Power. Most of them are true.” “I don’t care about rumors,” she whispered. “But you should.” He leaned closer, close enough that she smelled the spice of his cologne. “Because if you work for me, Ella… I will watch you. I will test you. I will find out exactly what makes you tick.” “And if I pass your tests?” His eyes darkened. “Then I’ll know how to break you.” Her breath caught. He smiled. “You start Monday.” --- Later that day, she sat at a café near the office, still shaking. Who was this man? Why did he affect her so deeply? And why did it feel like she had just walked into something she couldn’t escape? She didn’t know it yet, but Ella Johnson had just stepped into the center of Adrian Kane’s twisted empire— and she was already his favorite obsession. But unlike the others… She wouldn’t fall so easily. At least… that’s what she told herself.
