I look down at Ruby.
Her eyes are red and swollen and sad.
A small stupid part of me wishes that I could pull her in my arms and comfort her and kiss her sadness away and never let her go. I push that stupid thought away and scowl at her.
"What do you want?" I ask coldly.
That makes her burst into tears. She throws herself on me and clings onto me. This must be part of her game with my brother. Make me feel sorry for her and trick me into giving her some money. I push her away and step back. She's shocked by my cold gesture.
I shut the door quietly and grab her arm. I don't want to wake my niece. And I don't want her to see Ruby in this state. I never want her to see Ruby ever again.
"What do you want?" I ask again. "Why are you here?"
"In a few hours, I'll be arrested." S
