The car stops outside the mansion.
I'm about to jump out when Richard grabs my hand and fixes his eyes on me.
"Don't do anything stupid." He says calmly. "We walk in. Take Julia Rome. And leave."
I nod reluctantly.
The gate slides open when we step out of the car. A slim road with swaying trees on both sides lead up to a huge house with a big pool outside.
Julia Rome charges at us with a cone of chocolate ice-cream clutched in her hand, her dark hair dancing in the wind. My heart swells with joy and relief as tears sting my eyes.
Richard opens his arms wide for her but she runs to my arms instead. I pick her up and shower her chubby face with kisses. Her uncle fakes a frown and pinches her lightly.
Dan Davis steps out of the house, his hands shoved in the pockets of his pants.
