NOAH
'Babe, babe, wake up.'
'Urgh,' I groaned. 'What time is it?'
'It's 8:30.' The sultry female voice responded
'8:30?! F*ck! Michelle, I told you to wake me up thirty minutes ago!'
'You were sleeping so soundly, and I didn't want to disturb you.'
'I told you...'I started and then decided against it. 'Never mind.' This was more of my fault than hers. I should have set an alarm instead of relying on another person.
She stayed at the side, wringing her hands and looking sorry.
I felt bad immediately, I didn't have to be a jerk to her. 'I'm so sorry, Michelle.'
'It's okay, Noah.'
I hurriedly got up from the bed and rushed to put on the clothes I wore here yesterday. I have to go back to my house to get ready for the day. Michelle and I often meet up at her apartment, but rarely at mine. It's just... easier this way
Michelle is my 'girlfriend' if you want to be romantic, but we're more of f*ck buddies. I don't have the time or commitment for a relationship. Don't get me wrong, Michelle is a very nice woman, I'm not just a relationship person.
I'm even thinking of putting a stop to our relationship. It has been going on for three months now. Three months is a long time for me. She's starting to think we're going to be more than what we are now. I need to break it off before she gets too attached. At least, we can end up as friends.
I've done this a lot of times, and I've learned the hard way. But, it's not an issue for today.
'Bye, Michelle, thanks for yesterday.' I said as I was just about to rush out.
'Wait, Noah! Your coffee!' I quickly took a sip, thanked her, and left.
See? Too nice for someone like me.
I hopped in my car and drove to my house to take a shower and change my clothes. I have a busy and important day at work. We're launching a new luxury line, and I want to make sure everything is in perfect condition.
I was already running late, so it didn't take long to get ready. In no time, I was already in the parking lot of Marina Hayes headquarters.
Marina Hayes is a company built from the ground by my maternal grandparents. It's named after my grandmother. It's a company that my grandparents started from their living room. It's one of the first Black-owned luxury companies. Now, it's a multinational company with branches worldwide.
We make designer brands of clothes, footwear, and even jewellery.
The new line we're about to release means a lot to me. Recently, we've been tagged as only caring for the rich. In fact, my grandmother would be rolling over in her grave at what her 'baby' had turned into.
My grandmother's dream was to make clothes that were unique and special and could be affordable for everyone. But that's not the case now. I know it's someone's greed to be blamed.
Anyway, I proposed this line two years ago. It would have been sooner, but the board had to agree. I had to do and undo to get their approval. It's only a matter of time before the line is launched.
But, it feels really nice to fulfil my grandmother's dream.
'Good morning, sir.' My secretary, Victoria Lawrence, greeted me.
'Good morning, Victoria. I hope everything's going smoothly for the launch.'
'Unfortunately, sir, a new problem just cropped up. There's a problem with one of the distributors. They're refusing some of our products.'
'What? Again?! I settled all of this last month.'
'I know, sir, but they brought up a new set of issues.'
'Okay, send their details to me. I'll see what I can do.'
She did, and I went to work, figuring out a way to smooth things over with them.
'Hello, Mr Otto. What's all this?' I said on a call to one of my suppliers. 'I thought we'd already settled this. What's the problem again?'
I waited for him to reply, and he just mumbled an undecipherable answer.
'Mr Otto, what do you mean?'
After a few minutes of back and forth, I figured out what the cause was.
'No worries, I'll get back to you.' I ended the call after fielding his excuses to get to the root of the problem.
There can only be one person behind this.
I'm fulfilling my grandmother's dream, but not everybody sees it that way since this new line won't be as profitable as the others. But, we've made a lot of profit, I don't see why we can't do something to honour the founder.
I rushed out of my office to confront the culprit.
'What the f*ck are you up to?' I raged as I entered his office.
'Now, son. Is that any way to speak to your father and your boss?'
The person who's sabotaging me is my father. My father and I are estranged, to say the least. We do not get along, and I feel like he's doing something shady, I just can't prove it yet.
'Why are you influencing the distributors? What is your problem?!'
'I don't know what you're talking about.' He smirked
'You know what? Never mind, I'll handle this myself.'
My father is an *ssh*l*. He's selfish and greedy. I know him. He will not budge. I'll just have to deal with this myself. I've been doing this since I was a kid.
After my mother died when I was a kid, I lived with my maternal grandparents for most of the time. My father practically abandoned me. But it's like he's just getting worse. I can't even recognize the person he has become.
I still have faint memories of him being an okay father to me. But that was so long ago. Sometimes, I feel like they're just a figment of my imagination.
I made some calls, and I was able to get Mr Otto to distribute for us. This is just an example of how things are going wrong one after the other. I don't know how long I can do this until I get my full shares.
The shares will only be available on my 30th birthday. I'm 29 now. Waiting for the next two years will be a terror.
The reason my father has this much power and hold is because of these shares. And, most of the members of the board are in his pocket.
By evening, I was exhausted and done for the day.
I'll be so relieved when the line is finally launched.
I left the office and then went back to my house. I hit the gym as I got home. I worked out until my knee throbbed. I injured my knee when I was still a basketball player in college. It has healed, but it hurts when I've put too much pressure on it.
This house was the place I grew up in. It was the last place I had a perfect family before the death of my mother.
I took a shower after I was done, opened a can of beer, and sat outside.
On the surface, it might look like I have a perfect life with me being an heir to a multi billion company and the expensive life I live, but that couldn't be farther away from the truth...
