CHAPTER FOUR

NOAH 'I'm sorry, Noah, I don't think I'll be coming back anytime soon.' 'It's okay, Rochelle. I understand.' I returned. I'm on a call with my housekeeper, or should I say ex-housekeeper? She took a leave two weeks ago that she would be back by now, but she's telling me the opposite. Now, she's saying she might not come back. Rochelle has been with the family since I was a kid. She worked for my mum and stayed on after she died to care for me along with my grandparents. She's more of a family than a housekeeper. At first, she took a break because she wanted to spend some time with her daughter and grandkids. 'My daughter wants me to live with them. She and her husband are busy people, and they want me to watch their kids when they are at work. I'm cheaper than a daycare.' She chuckled slightly. 'I feel sorry leaving you in a bind.' 'Don't be sorry, Rochelle. You deserve a break. You've worked too hard. You should enjoy this time.' I said, and I meant it. 'And, you didn't put me in a bind.' 'I know how picky you are with who you let in your house. I feel bad that I didn't prepare anything for my predecessor.' She's right about that, but I don't have to agree with her, it will just make her feel bad. 'Don't worry about me, Rochelle. I promise you I'll be okay. I'll find a new housekeeper in no time at all.' 'Okay, if you say so. I'll miss you, Noah.' 'I'll miss you too. And don't hesitate to call me if you need anything.' 'Of course, dear. Bye.' I ended the call. It's Tuesday evening, and I was already back from work. We're still dealing with releasing the new line, and new problems just keep cropping up. I looked around the house, and it looked like it needed a housekeeper or a maid at least. It's too good to keep up on my own. I've been doing some cleaning, but I'm just too busy. I quickly sent an email to my secretary so she would help me find one. I included what I wanted in one; older, diligent and amazing references. At least one thing has been dealt with. I was set to enjoy an evening at home alone. I grabbed a bottle of beer and sat on the verandah when my phone rang. 'Hey, man. Where are you?' My friend, Julius called me 'At home like a normal adult.' 'Come on, old man! I'm at a club downtown. Why don't you join us?' 'You do know I have work tomorrow, right?' 'Just come, you won't stay long.' 'I'll think about it.' I said and hung up There's nothing wrong with me going to have fun with him. And I do need to let go of the stress I've been feeling. I made the decision to go, changed, and drove to the club. The club was noisy and rowdy as I entered. This brings back a lot of memories, most of them bad. 'Hey, Noah!' Julius called out to me. He was surrounded by a bevy of women and drinks where he was seated. As usual, Julius is a party animal. 'Hey, man.' I greeted him back, and he managed to free himself from the gaggle of women surrounding him, and we did the weird one-arm hug. 'I can't believe you would come!' He said to him. 'Bartender, bring everything. My friend is here!' As if the ones in front of him were not enough. Sometimes, it seems weird how both of us are friends, close friends at that. We're polar opposites. Julius loves parties and he's someone I can count on any time any place. This has been proven time and again. 'Noah, how are you doing, man? It's been a while.' He finally had my time when his 'girlfriends' had gone. 'I'm okay, how are you?' 'You know me, I'm always fine. What about work? I hope there has been no issue with your new project?' He asked, and I gave him a summary. Julius practically knows everything about me, but not about my dad. I'm more tight-lipped about it for obvious reasons, and it's embarrassing. 'Oh, that's not good. What about your girlfriend, Michelle? Are you guys still seeing each other?' 'She's not my girlfriend.' I replied. I've told him this several times, but he does this to get a rise out of me. 'You know I don't do girlfriends.' 'Oh yeah, I forgot your stupid rule.' He said sarcastically. 'What's wrong with Michelle? I've met her and she's a perfectly good person.' 'Just drop it, Julius, you know my views on that.' Trying to distract him, I asked him a question of my own. 'What are you up to? How is your family?' He looked at me like he knew I was deflecting him, but he just humoured me. I envy his relationship with his family. Who knows? I might have that if my mom was alive. We talked some more until it was late or, rather, early in the morning. I have work in the morning, and he's different since he's the sole owner. He could decide not to go to work later, and nothing would happen. I don't have that luxury. I barely touched the bottle of beer he ordered for me. I only took a couple of sips. But he's well on his way to being drunk. I called a designated driver for him, ensured his safety, and then sent him home, and I went home myself. I can't help but feel old because I'm not into this kind of life anymore. It was when I was younger that I used to frequent places like this. When I got home, I just took a short shower and went to sleep. -------------------------------------‐---------------------------------- 'I found a perfect housekeeper through an agency for you, sir. Do you need to check anything before I finalize the details?' This was the next morning, and I was at work already. 'Don't worry about it, Victoria, I trust you.' And I do. 'But, when will the housekeeper be available? I need her services asap. 'Of course sir. I've told the agency to send her as soon as possible and the rest of the details are on your table.' 'Okay, thank you.' Rochelle said I didn't like people in my space, but she's kinda right about it, but not everything. I don't have a problem with people who don't pose a threat to me. Older women have nothing on me. But, young ladies have tried to take advantage of my wealth, and I'm in no hurry for that to happen again.
