The change was gradual at first. Seraphina began spending more time in the darkness, roaming the manor at night, her bare feet silent on the stone floors. She would walk through the gardens and the forest beyond, and Kaelen would follow, drawn by a compulsion he could no longer resist.
She started speaking to the shadows, and sometimes the shadows answered back. He would hear whispers in the dark, voices that were not quite human, and when he turned to look, there was nothing there.
"You're becoming part of them," he said one night, watching as she stood in the moonlight, her pale skin glowing with an unearthly light.
"I'm becoming what I was always meant to be," she replied. "Don't you see, Kaelen? This is the gift Maelor gave me. He freed me from the limitations of mortality. I can feel everything now, experience everything, become everything."
"He's turning you into a demon."
She laughed, and the sound was beautiful and terrifying. "Is that so wrong? You think I'm losing myself, but I'm finally discovering who I really am."
Kaelen stepped forward, reaching for her. "Seraphina, please. I need you to fight this."
She turned to face him, and he saw that her eyes had changed. The blue was gone, replaced by a deep, endless black that seemed to swallow the light around them.
"I am fighting," she said. "I'm fighting to survive. And I'm fighting for you."
She moved toward him, her grace inhuman. When she touched his face, her fingers were cold, but there was warmth in the gesture—a warmth that he clung to like a lifeline.
"I remember what it felt like to be human," she said softly. "I remember the fear, the pain, the uncertainty. And I remember the love. The love I had for you, Kaelen. That hasn't changed. It's still there, buried somewhere deep inside me."
"Then hold onto it," he begged. "Hold onto that. Don't let the shadow take it away."
"It's not the shadow that's the problem," she said. "It's the bargain. We're bound to each other, Kaelen. Bound in ways that are beyond mortal understanding. The love I feel for you now is just as much a compulsion as the love you feel for me."
"No," he said fiercely. "That's not true."
"Then prove it," she challenged. "Prove to me that your love is real, that it's not just the demon's magic forcing you to feel what you do."
"How?"
She smiled, and it was the smile of the Seraphina he remembered, the young woman who had captured his heart years ago. "Let me go. Walk away from me. Leave this place and never come back."
Kaelen's heart seized in his chest. "I can't."
"Can't, or won't?"
The distinction was meaningless, and they both knew it. The compulsion was absolute. He would never be able to leave her. He would never be able to stop loving her.
"That's what I thought," she said softly.
And then she began to change.
The shadow that had been surrounding her swelled and expanded, wrapping around her like a cocoon. Kaelen watched in horror as her form shifted, twisted, remade itself into something new.
Her skin turned pale as moonlight, her hair grew long and dark, and her eyes—those beautiful, loving eyes—became pits of absolute darkness.
She was still Seraphina. He could see her in the curve of her lips, the tilt of her chin, the way she moved.
But she was also something else. Something ancient. Something powerful.
"The transformation is complete," she said, and her voice echoed with the whispers of the shadow. "I am what Maelor always intended me to be. His bride. His consort. The dark queen of his shadow realm."
Kaelen felt the world collapse around him. "No. No, you can't be."
"I can, and I am." She reached for him, her hand hovering just above his chest. "But I'm also yours, Kaelen. I'll always be yours. The love we share is binding, and nothing can break it."
"Then fight him," Kaelen begged. "Fight Maelor. Prove that you're stronger than he is."
She laughed, and the sound was like the tolling of a bell. "I don't need to fight him, Kaelen. I've made peace with what I am. And I've decided that I'm going to have you, too."
"What do you mean?"
She stepped closer, and the shadow around them thickened until he could barely see her face. "Maelor wants me for himself," she said. "But I'm not a prize to be claimed. I'm a woman, Kaelen. I've always been a woman. And a woman gets to choose who she loves."
His heart surged with hope. "Then choose me."
"I already have," she said. "I'm choosing you."
She pressed her lips to his, and this time, the kiss was not a gentle goodbye. It was a claiming, a branding, a declaration of war against the demon who had tried to steal them both.
When she pulled back, Kaelen felt different. The void in his chest was smaller, less consuming. The love he felt for her was still there, but it was no longer a cage. It was a choice.
"What did you do?" he whispered.
"I shared my power with you," she said. "A piece of the shadow, nestled in your heart alongside the love. You will still be bound to me, Kaelen. But you will also be free."
"I don't understand."
"You will," she said. "Soon, you will."
