Kongowea open air market is arguably the largest of its type in the East African region. Truckloads of farm produce mainly food products from all over the region offload their wares here and rush back to deliver more goods. All major hotels and eateries in the city procure their food items from this market. Layton Harris owned one of the largest grocery stores located in the market.
