Chapter 19 – A Test of Control

374 Words
Elena had won a small battle, but the war was far from over. Damon hadn’t agreed outright to her request, but he hadn’t refused it either. That was a victory—one she had to use wisely. She needed to make him trust her. She needed to be patient. And patience had never been her strong suit. --- Later that evening, Damon returned to the penthouse, his presence consuming the room the moment he stepped inside. He loosened his tie, his sharp gaze settling on her. “You asked for something that’s yours,” he said, his voice smooth yet unreadable. “Let’s see how far you’re willing to go to earn it.” Elena stiffened. “What do you mean?” A slow smirk played on his lips. “Come here.” Every nerve in her body screamed not to move. But she forced herself to rise, to step toward him, maintaining the illusion that she wasn’t afraid. Damon studied her, then reached into his pocket and pulled out a sleek black card. “A gala. Tomorrow night.” He extended the invitation to her. “You’ll be in my arms.” Elena blinked. That was it? “That’s your test?” she asked cautiously. His smirk deepened. “It’s a start.” She hesitated, then took the invitation from his hand. Their fingers brushed, sending a jolt up her spine. “What’s the catch?” she asked. Damon tilted his head, his dark eyes glinting. “You behave. You smile. And you don’t run.” Elena swallowed. This was dangerous. A public event meant exposure. A chance to see the outside world again. A chance to escape. Damon’s gaze darkened. “I’d think twice before getting any ideas.” Her breath hitched. Had he read her mind? She forced a smirk. “Who said I had any?” Damon chuckled, low and knowing. “Good.” He stepped closer, his voice dropping to a whisper. “Because if you try to run, Elena… I will find you.” The words sent an involuntary shiver down her spine. Because deep down… she knew he meant every word. And worse? A part of her wasn’t sure if she wanted to run at all. ---
