CHAPTER 7 A gypsy life was a hard life, but very few would change the way they lived, the freedom, seeing so many different places, meeting so many different people. It was a way of life and sad to say, a dying way of life. With the availability of machines to do the farming, there was no need for the extra help during harvesting. The only thing left to most of them now was fruit and hop picking and that was getting less and less. Each clan had their route and if your route didn’t include fruit and hop picking then you had to hope there would be other means to make money. Some families would join other clans or even find themselves a property and settle in one place, especially if there was permanent work, but always keeping in touch with the old ways.
