I could admit that most of January was a blur. Despite everyone’s best intentions, I developed an infection that kept me in the hospital, on strong IV antibiotics, for an extra two weeks. I’d worried about missing Danny’s birthday, but he paid me a visit. James left the room and, for a long time, the young man and I just talked. He was over me thanking him. He was annoyed at the beautiful electric car that had shown up on his doorstep that morning. And blown away by the charging station I had installed in his parents’ garage.
