Chapter 13

Jane POV I couldn't breathe because I was so overcome with emotion. My eyes were watering and my cheeks were as soaked as they'd been during yesterday's deluge. Huge mascara droplets coated my hands black, and my nose was clogged with snot that felt like concrete. For the first time, I was beginning to realize that waterproof mascara might be the best option for me going forward. I was unable to concentrate. It felt like someone had stabbed me in the heart, it was so bad. Sucking in mouthfuls of air, I tried to relax and quiet down my tense muscles. But I couldn't help but dwell on the fact that I had failed. When I realized how stupid I'd been for sleeping with the first person who ever treated me well, I felt humiliated. As I remembered how Eric had treated me when we first met, my mouth stiffened into a narrow, angry line. He'd been so awful, I should have known his actual colors were only evil ones after all he'd done. Suddenly, I heard a clattering group of heels across the tiled floor as the bathroom door slammed open. Pulling my knees up to my chest and bracing myself against the stall door, I took a deep breath and closed my eyes. When someone from Creovation, Inc. found out that I was sobbing in the restroom like a child, it was the last thing I wanted. Oh my god, have you seen Christian's son?" A high-pitched female scream rang out. I peeked through the stall door and saw three pairs of high heels standing in front of the sinks. Another woman chimed in, "What a hottie." This is something I'd love to have! It was the first voice that stated, "You are such a slut, Trisha." Do you think he will sleep with someone like you? "You've already been with half of the company!" Trisha let out a disgruntled sigh and stamped her heel on the floor. "But he's so enticing!" The first woman answered, "Yeah, if you want to catch something," in a sarcastic tone. "We're going to be late," she said. My body sank to its lowest point when the women exited the restroom. Their statements had made me even more depressed. I was numb. I wasn't furious or upset. My own foolishness was to blame; I was deserving of everything I'd gotten. There was a part of me that wished I could skip work. I wiped my eyes, grabbed my belongings, and fled into the filthy subway tunnels of New York City. But my better judgment told me that was a bad idea — Eric would have won had I done that. It was imperative that I demonstrate to him that I was a force to be reckoned with if I was going to win this match. In my office, Eric was as white as a ghost. Before I sank into my desk chair, I gave him my best smirk try. As I peered at him over the edge of my computer monitor, I thought, "You thought I'd be gone, didn't you?" But I'm still here, and I'm not leaving. Frazzled and disheveled, Christian emerged from his office. Jane, I need those reports filed by the end of day, he said, glancing at his watch. "If I don't hurry up, I won't be able to catch my flight." I was surprised to learn that you were leaving town. Christian stated he'd be back in the morning. Nothing more, just a meeting." I exclaimed, "Wow," as I took in the sights. The gaping mouth and slack jaw of Eric were glaring at me. Flying for a meeting is something I'd never consider doing. Christian's chuckle could be heard throughout the room. He sarcastically said, "It's a fun life." "Good night, Jane," he says. Observing his lack of goodbye words for his own son made me feel superior. I'll be fine, I thought to myself as Christian vanished down the hallway. Everyone has a goof. Because it happened now rather than later, it's a good thing. I got to my feet and wiped my palms on my dress as I turned to face Eric. I said with a cold, lifeless voice, "Please file these for me." "I am leaving." Eric argued that it was just four. Where the hell are you going"? I had to fight the urge to smile. Looking into his blue eyes brought back all of the lust from the night before, but I couldn't let him know how much it hurt me. Then I smiled and stated, "I'm leaving," with a stern expression. That's all you need to know." After an hour, I was hunched over Susan's shoulder, sobbing into my drink. Despite the fact that we were at our regular bar for happy hour, I was unable to relax. "I need to tell you something," I continued, taking a sip of my beverage. It was just my second drink, but the effects of the alcohol had begun to take hold and I felt more relaxed and content than I had all day. Susan nodded and said, "Sure." "What's going on?" I swallowed hard with a sigh of relief. I lost my virginity, " Last night? "Oh my god, what happened?" I nodded. The question is, "Who?" Biting my lip, I looked down at my mojito and smiled. "Eric Alfred," I whispered. “What?” When I heard Susan's screaming, my ears burned and I winced in pain. As soon as she said, "I'm sorry," she leaned forward and snatched one of my hands away. "Girl, what in the world just transpired?!" 'Do you remember how it rained last night?' I beseeched, my voice trembling. I sipped my drink slowly as Susan nodded. At least something was helping, even though the tequila was burning my throat. Susan said, "Yeah, but it wasn't pouring men." I don't know how in the world you ended up with him." Did you go back to your workplace ? I shrugged my shoulders. For a split second, I thought I was going to pass out from the spinning of the blonde hair in my peripheral vision. 'No,' I replied. As soon as I got out of here, I was on my way to the train. Upon reaching the intersection, he pulled up in his limo, and urged me to get in. What? "Oh my gosh," Susan screamed. With one hand, she shielded her mouth and stared at me with utter disgust. After all, our roles had been reversed, and it was almost fun to tell the story of how I'd lost my virginity. After all, "I did," I responded, with a little smugness in my voice. "I had no choice but to." I truly didn't have a choice in the matter. Because I'm uninsured at the moment, I can't afford to get treatment. When I am sick, I can't really afford it." Well, that's unfortunate," Susan stated with a sigh. No, you shouldn't have done it. I sigh. There is nothing I can tell you. It was a complete one-eighty from the way he acted at work – he handed me champagne and was incredibly hospitable. His demeanor had completely changed, and I couldn't believe it. Susan's snort was audible. I always find men to be a lot more excited when they think they might get laid as a result of it." That really hurt. As I murmured, "Ouch," my body tensed up. “Sorry.” The driver of his limo took me back to my house, anyway," I said. It was as if Eric was about to kiss me, but then he paused. I was going wild; just talking to him and being around him made me believe he was unique. As a result, I extended an invitation to him. "Damn," Susan exclaimed. "Professionally handled." "Except today he totally ignored me," I said.He basically told me not to talk to him. I took a swig from my beverage and sat back in my chair. "Susan, I'm really sorry I'm feeling this way. Obviously, he merely wanted to have s*x with me! Susan speculated, "Maybe he's afraid of getting into problems with his father,"Susan suggested. “You did mention that he’s on a tight leash.” “Well that didn’t stop him yesterday.” I made a sour face,I drank the rest of my drink and swallowed it down. He should never have kissed me in the first place. After he offered to take me for a ride in his limo, Much Less proceeded to seduce my pants right off. Susan let out a sigh. And I know what you're going through because I've been there," she sighed. "Maybe it's better that it happened now and you've gotten used to it," she suggested. I sigh. "I suppose," I murmured, my voice trembling. Susan said, "Hey, I'll be right back." Handing me her pocketbook, she sprang from the bar stool and gave it to me. "I have to relieve myself." Watching my lovely companion maneuver through the crowds, I nodded. Initially, I didn't understand what was going on. I'd behaved exactly as Susan would, and it hadn't helped. In fact, I felt worse than I had in a long time. I was beginning to lose the self-assurance I'd placed on myself before, and I felt more down than I had in a long time. I decided to take a lengthy soak in the tub at home instead. Tomorrow, start over. In order to make writing copy my full-time career, I'm going to have to ignore Eric. There was a soft male voice saying, "Excuse me. "Is this seat already taken??" He was standing directly next to Susan's empty seat when I spun around. "I'm sorry," I said, blushing. "My companion just went to the bathroom." " She will be right back". 'Damn,' the man muttered. He gave me a wink. He had blonde hair, blue eyes, and a healthy glow to his skin. But when I looked at him, there was nothing that made me feel restless, thrilled, and apprehensive the way Eric made me feel when we were together. “Sorry,” I said. I turned back to the bar, ever-conscious of the man’s stare at my back. So It wasn't because there was an empty seat that drew me here, he explained. When I saw your face, I decided to come over and give you a drink. Turning around, I frowned at him. I gestured to the mojito in my hand. “I’ve got one,” I said. Thank you. He laughed heartily. My name is Aaron, he said. "Would you like another drink from me?" I frowned. I wasn't sure if I should answer yes or no to the offer. My disastrous experience with Justin the day before had taught me a lesson, but on the other hand, I'd never improve my dating skills if I didn't try.
