/Eric/ My father placed the catalog on the desk. He then repositioned himself in his chair so that he was leaning back, and he folded his hands in his lap. The tone of Dad's voice was calm, steady, and even when he continued, "Eric, you are going to fix your life." When we last spoke, I was really upset, but I've learned to control that anger and have moved past it by now. I laughed dryly. I responded by nodding my head and saying, "Yeah, that's really good of you." "Why do I have to be here? "Another card, are you giving it to me?" "No," Dad answered curtly. "As a matter of fact, I will not be providing you with any additional credit cards under any circumstances. You are in this building because you will be working alongside another one of my staff, directly under my supervision. I made my pupils appear smaller. I responded by saying, "Yeah, yeah." "Why in the name of all that is holy would I do it?" My father appeared to be smiling ever so little, yet it was impossible to miss. Because, he said after a pause. "Because." "If you don't do what I say, I'll cut off access to all of the funds in your account. I will take back the condo that I bought for you, and you will have no choice but to look for job on your own. The comments cut me deeply, but I didn't want to give the impression that I was upset by them. Instead, I made a defensive posture by crossing my arms over my chest. “So?” It made me chuckle. "I am able to obtain employment. I am able to perform almost all that you are capable of, old man. I leaned over his desk. "And I'm very sure I could do it better." Dad laughed. "Eric, while that is a very nice falsehood, I'm not sure I trust you," the speaker says. He pounded the desk with his right hand fingers after stretching them into the air and tapping them against the surface. "Let's see. You attended an online university and earned a degree in a field that is so irrelevant that even a job flipping burgers would be out of the question for you. You have no resume. You have no talents, and as a result, there is no way that you could ever work in retail. And you are the most self-indulgent and spoiled young guy I have ever met. “Harsh,” I replied, shaking my head in amazement. Was he serious? Is it possible for him to complete all of these tasks if he so desires? It was as if my father could read my mind as he calmly and confidently stated, "I know you don't trust me." "But I'm afraid that things are going to have to shift, Eric. And the first step toward change is for you to take responsibility for your life and get to work for me. I grinned. With a chuckle on my face, I remarked that a member of one's own family makes for the ideal employer. My father shake his head . He responded by saying, "Not quite." He smiled once more, but this time it was a malicious one that revealed his flawless false teeth. "You will be treated as any other employee who is on probation." "If this is the first time you are late for work, you will be terminated immediately. You are to conduct yourself in a gentlemanly manner. You are not to break any of the rules in any way, shape, or form, do you understand?" I whispered, "This is outrageous," as I ran a hand through my hair and sank down into the leather chair that fronted my father's desk. The chair was facing my father's office. "I refuse." "Well, then you are welcome to find your own place, as well as income." "Shall I call security to escort you out of the building?" "Do you wish for me to call security?" For a brief second, I had trouble swallowing due to the panic that was building up in my throat like molten lava. "You are definitely taking this seriously," I replied in a hushed voice while slowly opening both of my eyes wide. Dad nodded. "If I'm being completely honest, I'm a little disappointed that I didn't come to this decision sooner." When he grinned once more, I had to battle the temptation to hit him in the face for how arrogant he seemed. I responded with a bitter "I bet." "Shall I call in your new boss?" "Are you ready?" I flailed both of my arms about wildly before me. "Are you going to lop off my testicles, too?" My dad gave me that curious look and lifted eyebrows. He responded by saying, "I've decided to disregard the remark." "However, the next time you come at me with an attitude, I'm going to terminate you." As my father clicked a button on his desk, I sank down into the luxurious leather and watched him. The intercom made a popping sound. "Jane, will you kindly come into my office?" my father beckoned to her. He gave me a friendly smile. "Jane will be in charge of you going forward." I rolled my eyes and groused, "I have to work under a woman?" "Are you f*****g kidding me?" After only a few seconds, the front door to my father's office opened. The mousy blonde who had been standing outside entered the room. Her cheeks were bright and flushed, and even I was able to see that she appeared to be in a state of extreme anxiety. She wouldn't look at me directly in the eyes, but she wouldn't stop excitedly licking her lips and poking her tiny pink tongue out of her mouth. As she got closer, I couldn't help but make a snide remark when I noticed the dress she was wearing; it was ill-fitting and appeared to have been purchased from a thrift or discount store. Her footwear consisted of a pair of hideous loafers, similar to those that primary school teachers wore in the nineties. Additionally, her wavy blonde hair was pulled back into a knot at the crown of her head, while the back of her neck featured a few stray curls that had been let loose. On another girl, it might have a more seductive vibe. On Jane, though, the effect was to make her appear as though she had not gotten out of bed until she arrived at work. "Jane," my father said. "This is my son, Eric,". Jane's cheeks became even more radiant. She faced me and gave a small nod before turning her head slightly. Jane smiled warmly and whispered, "Pleased to meet you."
