Chapter 18

I was thinking about it the whole time I walked back to the office. Hannah's beautiful face kept circling in my head, making me feel fluttery and delighted. I saw she wasn't at her desk when I returned. I frowned as I left her sandwich and went to sit. It was unusual for her to vanish in the middle of the day. I was curious whether she had a meeting with my father. It was odd, since Jane seemed to know him better than I could. I got up and headed over to his office after two hours had gone and she hadn't returned. Dad sat at his desk, glaring at his computer and typing rapidly. "Hey," I replied as I slid into the chair across from his. "Can you tell me where Jane is?" Dad raised his head and squinted his eyes, as if he was seeing me for the first time. “Why?” I laughed. "Well, in case you don't remember," I joked. "She's my boss. And she's been gone for about two hours. I don’t have anything to work on.” Dad threw me a fat folder brimming with paperwork. “You can file these,” he said. "Yeah, but where is Jane?" My father fixed his gaze on me. "She's been fired," he said. "I had her taken out of the building." “What?” I sprang out of my jaw, my mouth wide open. "Why the f**ck would you do that?" My father exhaled a sigh. "I'm not a fool, Eric," he replied softly. "I knew what was going on. She was becoming attached to you, and as your boss, this placed the firm in a bad position. You've been showing a lot of potential in recent weeks, and I didn't want it to alter because of a lady." I just stared at him. "You genuinely have no clue what you're saying," I replied as calmly as I could. "You've got everything wrong dad." Dad c****d his brow. "Oh, yes?" "Then explain it to me," he sarcastically remarked. "For one thing, we're in a relationship." I've been the one encouraging Jane to keep her calm at work because I didn't want to irritate you!" I roared and threw my hands in the air. "She's changed my life, and I've been doing well because of her!" She's been teaching me all I need to know to be successful in work!" "I'm sorry, Justin—" "I know," I grumbled. "You've got your reasons. And, although I have my filthy trust money, Jane has none. If you want to fire someone? "Fire me," I yelled angrily. "This isn't fair to her." Before my father could respond, I turned around and marched out of his office. Jane POV When the buzzer rang from downstairs, I couldn’t even pick myself up off the couch and out of my nest of blankets. I’d been curled up crying ever since I got home – wondering what the hell I was going to do now that I’d been fired from one of the most prestigious consulting firms in the world. Creovation Inc. had seemed like a decent idea at the time, but I was now bitterly regretting ever stepping inside that elegant office and applying for a job. I heard loud footsteps in the hall, and then a pounding on the door. "There's someone below for you, woman!" Shirley, my next-door neighbor, screamed through the door. "They keep ringing my door and asking me to come fetch you!" "I don't care," I retorted. "Please leave me alone!" "Either you come to deal with your visitor or I will call the police," Shirley yelled back. "And I'm not fooling around!" I sighed and pushed myself off the sofa. I walked downstairs, a blanket wrapped over my shoulders. I attempted to soak up the grungy apartment staircase as I proceeded, knowing well that I'd have to give up my apartment and return to Pennsylvania shortly. Eric was standing outside, much to my surprise. He drew me into a tight embrace before I could say anything. "I love you, Jane," Eric murmured firmly in my ear. "I'm also very sorry for what happened. I didn't find out until I got back." He moaned as he drew away from me. I could see he was upset. “I let my dad have it,” he said, raking a hand through his dark hair. My lip quivered, and hot tears ran down my cheeks. "I love you, too," I quietly whispered. “What’s going to happen?” "I'm not sure." Eric's tone was solemn. "But I pledge to be there for you, sweetie, no matter what." I'll assist you till you're able to get back on your feet. I'm completely in love with you and i want you to be mine." I couldn't stop the tears from falling, despite my best attempts to wipe them away. "I love you so much," I wept as I clutched Eric's chest. "You don't deserve me." "You do," Eric said. He placed his fingers under my chin and pushed my head up to meet his gaze. "I'm the one who isn't deserving." A gorgeous black limo came up to the curb just as I was about to argue back. I gave Eric a frown. "I shouldn't leave my flat," I told myself. "I need to look for a job." However, Eric was frowning. "That's not mine," he oddly said. "I took a taxi here." Christian J. Alfred hopped out of the rear of the limo before I could think about how crazy it was that the guy I loved was taking a cheap taxi. His expression was solemn and drawn. "Jane, I need to apologize," Christian said modestly. "I made a mistake by firing you. I'd love to have you back if you're willing to return to Creovation." I shifted my gaze from Christian to Eric. "I'm not sure what's going on," I mumbled. Christian chuckled.“I made an error,” he said. “I was mistaken – I saw Eric’s progress and assumed it had nothing to do with you. But after you left, Eric helped me see the error of my ways. You’ve helped change my son’s life, and I shouldn’t be punishing you.In fact, I'd want to elevate you to full-time Creovation copywriter. You've done nothing but excellent work, and we're delighted to have you on board." I blinked. “I don’t know what to say,” I said softly. Eric drew me into a gentle kiss. "Say yes," he said quietly. "Yes," Christian agreed. He grinned at me, and for the first time, I saw a likeness between Eric and his father. "You're welcome to return as long as you can keep my son in order." "Yes," I said excitedly. I was still weeping, but these were happy tears. "Of course, I'll return!" Eric kissed me on the lips. "Be mine forever," he said quietly. "Jane, I adore you." I smiled at him. "I love you, too," I quietly whispered. "But there's one problem." Christian and Eric both stared at me. "What is it?" I said, smirking. "Eric needs to work in a different department," I joked. "I don't feel comfortable bossing about my boyfriend." Christian smiled. "Done," he said. I moaned as Eric drew me into his arms and kissed me passionately.Somehow, against the odds, I knew that I’d finally found my perfect happy ending.
