Jane's POV
I shrieked in fear as thunder rumbled in the sky and leaped into the air. I realized that I was going to have to pick up the pace if I wanted to reach Brooklyn before the rain started falling if I wanted to avoid getting caught in it. I made a mad dash down the street in the direction of the subway entrance, moving as swiftly as I could.
Although I was still not very familiar with Manhattan, I had the distinct impression that there was a stop in the vicinity of where I was standing.
The rain began to pour from the sky, bringing with it a chilly rain that soaked my face and shoulders. I let out a groan as I noticed that the thin fabric of my dress was beginning to get wet. It was unusually chilly rain in early October, and I couldn't take the chance of becoming sick because of what it would mean for me at work.
I let out a yelp as I ran as rapidly as I could down the street in my low heels as the gentle sprinkle of rain became into a violent storm. Puddles were developing all around me, and despite my best efforts to stay dry, I managed to fall into a particularly deep one. As a result, rain splashed all over my legs, and I was drenched up to my knees.
When I finally made it to the crossroads, I was shivering all the way down to my bones.
I pleaded, "Come on, come on," as I fixed my eyes on the pedestrian walk signal, hoping against hope that it would soon change. I was just a block away when I finally saw the sign for the subway, and I knew that in order to avoid getting pneumonia, I had to get there as quickly as I could after seeing it.
A svelte black limousine arrived at the curbside in the nick of time. I let out a sigh. Was this jerk going to continue to park in this spot where he blocked traffic? What the hell was going on? ,
The back door suddenly opened, and I rolled my eyes as I waited for some high-powered business person to dash out into the pouring rain while cursing his bad luck. Nevertheless, I let out a small shout of astonishment when I realized who was seated in the very back of the car.
It was Eric . And when he waved his hand in my direction, he beckoned me to come inside.
/Jane/
I looked at him in complete and utter confusion before asking, "Eric?"
Eric gave a grin. "Get in," he said. He made a quick sideways movement with his head.
I stutteringly responded, "Oh no, I couldn't." My cheeks turned a fiery crimson as I blushed.
Eric urged me on saying that else I might become ill. He flashed a grin and a wink. Even with only the wink, he was able to completely win over my affection, and as he held out his hand to help me, I shuddered.
I sighed. “But…”
Eric replied in a resolute manner, "No buts." "Get a move on."
I heaved a sigh. I let out a squeal as I jumped forward into the limo as the rain began to pour more heavily than it ever had before.
After I had finished talking to him, Eric slammed the door and knocked on the divider. He spoke in a loud and distinct voice and said, "Take us to Brooklyn." When he saw me, he gave me a smirk. "I take it that's where you live right?"
It made me flush. "That should be apparent, right?"
Eric gave a grin. “Champagne?”
I formed a frown. "What is the point of you doing this?" I inquired after Eric offered me a glass of Dom Perignon and I gratefully accepted it from his outstretched palm.
“What?” After taking another sip of his champagne, Eric relaxed against the back of the seat. "For what reason am I doing this?"
I mumbled something about being polite to myself. “Why? You are not required to, so why are you acting in this manner?
Eric laughed “What? Is it forbidden for me to be polite at this point?
I stared at him, unable to believe that the man who had been strutting around in front of me all day was the same arrogant, grinning individual that I was looking at.
The transition was as sudden and obvious as the transformation from Dr. Jekyll to Mr. Hyde.
"No, that's not what it is at all." I took small sips of my champagne, savoring the velvety flavor that the bubbly alcohol imparted on my palate. "I simply..." I started, but then I trailed off as my flush intensified. "I can't say for sure. I had the impression that you didn't care for me."
Eric gave a shrug. He remarked, "I am not familiar with you." He arched his brow, which caused my blush to become even more obvious. He continued by resting his hand on my knee and said, "I'd like to know you, though." I felt a chill run down my spine as the contact from his skin sent a searing heat through the wet fabric of my clothing.
The limo continued to move along in complete silence. When compared to the New York that I was accustomed to, it seemed like an entirely new universe. I was suddenly encompassed in a silky world of plush fabric and leather, and driving calmly through the congested streets. Previously, I had been surrounded by a grimy, stinky, and buzzing city.
I let out a sigh as I leaned my body against the back of the seat. "This is something that I could get used to," I whispered while finishing off the glass of champagne I was sipping.
After a moment, Eric topped out the glass I was drinking from. "Here," he replied, offering me a Burberry blanket. "Don't want you to catch a cold?" I fixed my gaze on him, scrutinizing the sapphire in his eyes for any indication that he was being sarcastic. However, there was nothing there but sincerity in its most unadulterated form.
