"Mason was my best buddy," I eventually murmured, barely above a whisper.
"I'm terribly sorry." Her eyes widened, and she expressed sympathy. "I'm deeply saddened by your loss."
"Yeah, that's what everyone says," I murmured to myself, avoiding her stare. "No offense, but it's not really helpful." I mean, you didn't know him or anything... "
"No, but I can understand how his death affected you deeply." And I apologize for that. Nobody should have to go through this."
