Chapter 10

Jane POV "So," I said in a nonchalant manner. "What exactly took place with your father?" The expression on Eric's face changed, and I immediately felt bad for asking. It was right as I was ready to tell him that it was irrelevant that he let out a sigh and began speaking. Eric remarked in a condescending tone, "I am aware of how it appears." "Poor little affluent boy who has problems with his father. I know. But there's more to it than that." He heaved a sigh. "My dad has never taken anything I've said seriously. I suppose I'd given up attempting to disprove his claims a long time ago... not that I've ever really made an effort to do what's right, either. I tilted my head to the side and took a gulp of the bubbly beverage before continuing. Oh, was the only thing I could manage to utter. Eric continued: "I have no idea what it was like for you growing up in your family; I was never there." "But my life has always been a little bit of a circus. My father was never home because he was constantly busy with work. And by the time I was a young child, my mother had already divorced him. She left town with her attorney, and the two of them have set up house in the Bahamas. Also, she is the mother of four children. She has started an entirely new life. I don't see why she would want me to be a part of it. My one and only strength is in my ability to bring up the subject of her failed marriage. I formed a frown. I responded with a measured, "I'm sure that's not true." It is expected of mothers that they will love their children without conditions. Eric let out a scathing laugh. He responded with "Yeah, supposed to" "That's the most important thing to remember, isn't it?" I flushed red in the face and felt like an i***t. I mumbled the words "I'm sorry" in a low voice. "I realize this can't be an easy situation for you," I said. Eric shrugged. I couldn't help but gaze at how big and muscular his hands were as he ran a hand through his black hair. When I thought about how it might feel if he touched me one more, I couldn't help but tremble. My stomach was churning with butterflies as I was near him, since I couldn't help but feel both delighted and nervous at the same time. I am thankful that there was champagne. It made engaging in a real conversation with Eric a lot less difficult for some reason. Eric responded, "Well, I'm fine." He smirked. "I despise being a complainer. I don't know what's wrong with me; I don't often talk to people in such a way. I formed a frown. "Why don't you? You don't seem to have any good pals, do you? When I heard how foolish and corny I sounded, I couldn't help but shudder. Eric nodded. "Yeah, but if you want to know a little secret about guys, I'll let you in on it: we don't actually talk about our emotions that much." He gave another smirk. "Robin, my best friend, and I don't really have a lot of conversations. Going out for beer is what we do most of the time." I nodded. I was experiencing a peculiar emotion that was almost identical to envy: it was pulsing through my veins. I tried everything I could think of to figure out why it mattered to me so much, but to no avail. Then I had the epiphany that it was because I was getting to a point where I felt a lot more at ease when I was around Eric. The fact that I felt envious whenever I thought of him going out on an ordinary day. I wondered what it would be like if I were just a female, and he was just a guy, and we met in a bar, rather than during a problematic arrangement at work. In that scenario, we wouldn't be arguing over anything. "You're quiet," Eric remarked. "That was really unexpected." He let out a laugh. "I got the impression that you were the talkative type." I got a red face. "I'm lousy at small conversations," I said. "That was something that, according to my mother, always made me awkward because I went right for the big questions." Eric laughed. However, he continued by saying, "That's fantastic, though — more women should be like you." This time, his eyes remained on my face for an extended period of time. He moved across the bench to be more comfortable. Oh my god, I just figured it out. It looks like we're about to have another kiss. As Eric got closer, my heart skipped a beat and started beating erratically in my chest. I felt like I was going to pass out. He licked his lips, and the rumbling in my gut increased dramatically. The vehicle came to a screeching halt just as he wrapped his arm around my shoulders, and I was startled. "Mr. Eric?" A voice with a thick accent could be heard over the intercom. "Mr. Eric, where exactly do you want me to take you in Brooklyn?" Damn! Eric let out a sigh. He laughed as he peered directly into my eyes, but it wasn't an evil laugh by any means. It was a warm one. It appeared to me, based on the way the corners of his eyes wrinkled up, that he was having a lot of fun hanging out with me. "Jane, where do you live? " The way Eric said my name caused me to feel weak around my knees. I couldn't believe it when I saw it was the same guy I'd been cursing out in my brain all day long! "Crown Heights," I mumbled through my teeth. At the intersection of Kingston and Brooklyn streets Eric nodded and grinned before responding, "Got it." The limousine made its way through the city streets. I couldn't help but keep waiting for Eric to either say something else to me, kiss me once more, or heck, even flirt with me! But he maintained his silence while playing with the stem of his champagne glass and looking at me out of the corner of his eye. My nerves were all tangled up, and it made my stomach feel sick. Is this how things are going to continue to be from this point forward? As the limo came to a gradual stop, I couldn't help but wonder. Is he going to act as though nothing has happened? Is he planning to make fun of me? What can I expect tomorrow to be ? Eric said "this is it." He opened the door by reaching over me and unlocking it. When his arm brushed against the front of my dress, I trembled and had an instantaneous desire for him to put both of his arms around me and draw me in so close that I would be unable to breathe. I tried to channel Susan's confidence as I stared at him nervously while licking my lips and staring at him. "Are you interested in coming up here?" I proceeded to ask gently. The words seemed to be ablaze as they lingered in the atmosphere. "Sure," Eric answered. He grinned. Why the heck not, right?
