Prologue ~ Myst

“I just don't understand,” She exclaims looking up at Quin.     “I told you. They can do anything I want them to do. Granted it is not permanent unless they are dead it goes back after a while but it's all basically the same.” He uses his shadows to pull her against him.     Pushing him away she lets out a groan. “Stop, I already told you that we are not staying together. I can't do it anymore. I know that there will come a day where I need to pick between work and you and I will always pick work.”     “It doesn't have to be that way. You don't always have to pick work over me.” Smiling he reaches for her face.        “Get out.” she stares him down until he throws his hands up.      "Fine, but be warned, there will be a day that I will be needed in your life again, there will be begging, and I will sit back and watch. There will be no coming back." His voice was cold as ice as he spoke.     God, she hated when he spoke to her like that. It was as if she was inferior to Him and someone and appointed him king of the world. He wasn't but she stopped pointing that tout to him. Her ears fall on deaf ears at this point. "Then let us be grateful that day never happens." She mumbles under her breath.     “It will happen and you watch, and when it does you will be sorry.” His shadows engulf him and he disappears.     That was Quin's favorite way to travel, by shadow. She rolls her eyes finishing getting dressed as she heads out making her way to work. She doesn't bother locking the doors because there was no need for it, every window and doorway was lined with salt. That generally kept the buggers out.     One of the perks that came with her job was that she knew how to keep just about any creature from entering her house. She could deter a lever 1 - 5 any higher and it was impossible to keep them away with just salt unless you sat on a higher level.     News flash, Shes human. At least that was what Myst told everyone. When she was about six or seven she learned that she wasn't quite human. Having been raised with fairly relaxed parents she ended up falling out of a tree. It wouldn't have been that big of a deal had it not been on the edge of a cliff. That's when it happened, wings appeared, pure white wings. After ending up back on the edge of the cliff she never told a soul, not even her parents.     That was how she ended up where she was today. Hunting other supernaturals. It was tough for her because the other supernaturals seemed to know she wasn't human but she couldn't do anything to change that just hoped that they stayed quiet.     Someone bumps into her causing her phone and notebook to fall out of her hands clattering on the cement. She looks up catching a brief glimpse of brown hair immediately knowing who that person was. She crouches down gathering her things before standing back up and looking up at Her building.     She grew up in this world alone. Very few people seemed to like her and that was perfectly fine. It is easier to be a hermit when people don't talk to You. That was one of the reasons work was difficult. Everyone there loved her. Even the people she was tracking down to take in liked her oddly enough.     In the relationship department, however, she was done. Quin would be the first and last person she ever dated. After all, things get complicated when you date a devil.     “Myst, out of your head.” One of her coworkers shouts before disappearing into the building.     “Sorry, Tina. I'm on it.” She said to no one in particular.
