  I was right – you couldn’t stop the gossip – not even with Jace’s heavy-handed measures. Jodie’s near-dismissal may have sent out a message, but ultimately people couldn’t be controlled, as I’d found out for the rest of the day.   Nobody knew the real reason that I had been packed off to Jace’s house, and I’d been the at the brunt of their stares and whispers for a large portion of my working day. To top things off, Jace had had to stay in work a bit later than usual, and with him being my lift home, I had to stay behind with him. I could only imagine what people were making of that.
