CHAPTER TWO ‘Shh, little one. Shh.’ In an effort to soothe Ana, Guinevere picked her up. She rocked Ana in her arms, but the child’s cries grew louder. She and Ana were alone in the bedchamber. The rest of the court had gone to the chapel to celebrate the Christ Mass. Even her attendants had forsaken her, not willing to have their absence from the chapel noted. Guinevere had refused to attend, wishing instead that she could go to the Sacred Grove for the winter festival to mark the death and rebirth of the God of Light, Lleu Llaw Gyffes. It was a relief to have the excuse of feeding Ana as a reason not to attend the Christian festival. Since her return from Joyous Gard she’d participated as little as she could in court life, preferring to keep her distance while Arthur was away from court
