CHAPTER EIGHT The stairs opened onto a large hall, but there was no one in it. Callie walked through it and up another flight of stairs to a smaller room. She looked about, noting the signs of occupation in a half-finished tapestry on a stand, and a silver beaker and several cups resting on top of a small cupboard. Wooden stools, and a couple of more comfortable chairs were placed around a large and elaborately carved table, while several cushioned benches lined the walls. Bright tapestries added colour to the scene, as did a woven mat upon the floor. A huge fire burned bright in the hearth, and Callie hurried towards it, desperate to warm herself and to hush the crying baby.
