CHAPTER THREE: UNRAVELING TENSIONS Eleanor I walked out of that room, my head spinning with a mixture of disbelief and fear. My fingers clutched the edge of the hallway’s marble railing, grounding myself. But even as I gripped it tightly, it felt like the world was slipping out of control. I had just agreed to something I couldn’t take back. I had just agreed to work with Reign Andrew—an enigmatic billionaire whose words seemed to carry weight far beyond anything I could understand. The moment I stepped back into the main corridor of the building, I noticed the eyes on me again. They weren't just the usual idle glances I had gotten in passing. There was something more in their stares now—curiosity, intrigue, and maybe even something darker. Had they all heard? Had they seen? I walked faster, my heels echoing in the quiet space as I approached the elevators. But before I could press the button to call one, I heard a familiar voice behind me. “Eleanor.” I froze. It was Reign. His voice—low, commanding—stopped me dead in my tracks. I turned slowly to find him standing at the end of the corridor, his silhouette towering against the bright sunlight filtering through the office windows. He didn’t smile, didn’t move. He just... watched me, his eyes dark with something unreadable. I swallowed hard. “What is it now?” I said, keeping my voice steady even though my insides felt like they were being twisted into knots. “You’re not leaving.” “I’ve already made my decision,” I said, my tone sharp. “And there’s nothing you can say that will change my mind.” His eyes softened slightly, but only for a moment, before his gaze hardened again. “You don’t get to make decisions here, Eleanor. I do. And I’m telling you: You’re not leaving.” I clenched my fists at my sides, fighting the impulse to back away. Something about him... the way he spoke... made it feel like there was no escape. “I don’t belong here,” I said, struggling to keep my voice steady. “I don’t want to be a part of your world, Reign.” “You don’t have a choice,” he said calmly. “We’re in this together now. And trust me—if you think walking away is an option, you’re mistaken.” I bristled. The air around us seemed to thicken with tension, almost suffocating. But then, as if sensing my resistance, he stepped closer, closing the space between us. “I don’t have time for games, Eleanor,” he continued, his voice a low murmur. “And neither do you. If you want to get out of this, you’ll have to play by my rules.” I could feel my heart pounding in my chest. His proximity was unnerving. The sheer power that radiated from him left me feeling small, insignificant. Yet, there was something else—something magnetic. I had to get away. “I need space to think,” I said, my voice barely above a whisper. He studied me for a moment, his eyes piercing through me as if he could see right into my soul. Finally, he nodded, but his next words sent a shiver down my spine. “I’ll give you the space you need, Eleanor,” he said, his lips curling into a smile. “But remember this: When I need you... you’ll be ready.” And just like that, he turned on his heel and walked away, leaving me standing there, breathless and shaken, in the heart of a place I didn’t belong. Reign I watched her retreat, her body language a mix of defiance and fear. Eleanor Quinn was more than she appeared. I saw it in her eyes. She was trying to play the part of someone who had control, but she was already in deeper than she realized. I wasn’t done with her yet. The moment I’d walked into my office and seen her, I knew I couldn’t let her go. There was something about her that was both frustrating and fascinating. Something that stirred a desire in me that I hadn’t felt in years. And now that she had agreed to stay, I had all the time in the world to unravel her. I didn’t like to be challenged, didn’t like people who didn’t follow my orders without question. But Eleanor... she wasn’t like the others. She was different. I needed her to understand that. Eleanor The elevator doors slid open, and I stepped inside, leaning against the wall as the doors closed behind me. I stared at my reflection in the polished metal, barely recognizing myself. Who was I? What was I doing? I had just agreed to stay in a job I didn’t want, to work for a man I didn’t trust. But I couldn’t ignore the pull I felt. The strange, undeniable force that had drawn me in since I first met Reign. It was as if I was tethered to him by some invisible string, and no matter how hard I tried to break free, it always pulled me back. The elevator reached the ground floor with a soft ding, and I stepped out into the lobby. But before I could make my way to the exit, I was stopped by someone I didn’t expect. It was Derek—the head of HR. “Miss Quinn,” he greeted, his voice smooth and polite, but there was something off about his expression. “A moment of your time, please?” I nodded, my stomach sinking. “What’s this about?” I asked, my voice tight. “I just wanted to make sure you’re settling in well,” Derek said, his eyes flickering toward the reception area. “Mr. Andrew has a... special interest in you. He’s requested you be transferred to a new department.” A new department? I hadn’t even been here long enough to get used to the old one. “Transferred?” I repeated. “Yes,” he replied, his smile tight. “The details are all worked out. Mr. Andrew wants you closer to him. We need you in his personal assistant’s office by this afternoon.” I blinked. “Personal assistant?” “That’s right. I’ll have someone escort you to your new office. You’ll report directly to Mr. Andrew from now on.” I felt a wave of unease wash over me. The last thing I wanted was to be even closer to him. But Derek’s words echoed in my mind, each one more chilling than the last. Mr. Andrew wants you closer to him. Reign I was in my office, watching Eleanor through the cameras, when Derek approached her in the lobby. I couldn’t help but feel a sense of satisfaction as I saw her look confused, disoriented even. This was the beginning. I would make her understand what I needed. She might be a challenge, but I never back down from a challenge. Eleanor I walked into the personal assistant’s office, my heart thudding in my chest. The room was larger than I expected, more lavish, with a wide glass desk and floor-to-ceiling windows that overlooked the city. I tried to steady my breathing as Derek led me inside. And there, sitting behind the desk with his back to me, was Reign. I could feel his presence before he even spoke. “You’re late,” he said, his voice calm and commanding. I didn’t answer, choosing instead to stand quietly. I didn’t know what to say. What could I possibly say? “Sit,” he ordered, his tone unyielding. I sat. And that was when it all started to feel real. Just as I was about to speak, the door slammed open. A tall, shadowed figure stepped inside. “Reign,” the voice growled. “We need to talk.”
