"Let go of me." Evelyn pulled her wrist free and stepped back until her spine hit the cool glass of the reception partition. Julian's hand dropped back to his side. He didn't chase her space, but his gaze stayed fixed on her face, cool and unhurried. "Miss Hart," Dr. Vance stammered, wringing her hands as she hovered near the doorway. "Please, if we could just step into the conference room to discuss the legal and medical implications quietly" "Quietly?" Evelyn looked from the pale, sweating doctor to the man standing in front of her. "You made an unthinkable error, and your solution is to let a complete stranger corner me in your lobby?" "I am not a stranger," Julian said smoothly, taking a pen from his inner coat pocket and turning it between his fingers. "And I am not cornering you. I am managing a crisis that involves my family." "It's an embryo," Evelyn said, keeping her voice even. "An embryo created through a clinic mistake." "It is my child," he replied, his tone conversational, as if stating the weather. "Which makes this a private matter, not a public scene." Evelyn took a breath, forcing her heart rate down. "I signed up for an anonymous process to avoid this exact situation. I have my own home, my own career, and my own plans. I'm going home, and my lawyer will contact Dr. Vance in the morning." She turned toward the glass doors, but Julian didn't move to block her. He simply spoke over her shoulder. "YOUR land lord called your office twenty minutes ago, didn't he?" Evelyn paused, her hand hovering inches from the door handle. She turned back slowly. "What?" "The main riser on the fourth floor ruptured this afternoon," Julian said, checking his watch. "Water is currently through your ceiling. The building manager is shutting off power to the entire wing for repairs. You can't stay there tonight, Miss Hart. Nor for the next month." Evelyn felt a tight, cold knot form in her stomach. Her apartment. Her quiet, safe space. "How do you know about my building?" "Vance Development holds the mortgage on the property," Julian said plainly, placing the pen back inside his jacket. "When the manager filed the emergency maintenance order, it crossed my desk. It took five minutes to connect your name on the tenant list with the file Dr. Vance was holding." He reached into his pocket and produced a folded document, extending it across the small gap between them. "I have an estate in the hills with a fully detached guest house," Julian continued. "It has its own entrance, separate utilities, and full privacy. My personal medical team is already on retainer. If you stay there, you have absolute autonomy, proper care, and immediate security while we let the lawyers sort out the paperwork." Evelyn stared at the paper in his hand. She didn't take it. "And if I check into a hotel instead?" she asked. "You can," Julian acknowledged. "And within an hour, the press will realize why the CEO of Vance International spent his afternoon at a fertility clinic. They will follow you to whatever lobby you sit in. If you want peace, Miss Hart, my property is the only place you'll find it." The silence in the lobby stretched between them. Evelyn looked at Dr. Vance, who looked ready to faint, and then back at Julian. His gray eyes were steady, not threatening, but entirely unyielding. He was backing her into a corner using facts, not force. She reached out and took the folded document from his hand. "A few ground rules," Evelyn said, holding the paper tightly against her side. Julian gestured slightly with his head. "Go on." "The guest house is mine. No unannounced visits, no uninvited entries." "Fair." "I keep working. My job is not open for negotiation." "I expected nothing less." "And Dr. Vance is removed from my care immediately," Evelyn said, looking past him at the doctor. "I want an independent physician of my choosing." Julian glanced briefly at the trembling clinic director, then back at Evelyn. "Consider it done," he said. "The car is outside. Let's go pick up what's left of your apartment."
