FATHER'S GAMBIT

1344 Words
Your father?" Evelyn's voice dropped, the air in the room suddenly heavy. "Why would Arthur Vance co-sign an injunction with a medical clinic?" Julian didn't answer right away. He turned toward the door, holding his umbrella over her as they stepped back out into the rain. "Because Arthur doesn't believe in loose ends," Julian said, his long strides cutting through the puddles toward the main entrance. "And he certainly doesn't leave succession open to chance." "Succession?" Evelyn kept pace, pulling her coat tight against the wind. "Julian, I used a registered clinic. How does that involve his succession planning?" "Because to my father, those children aren't just patients," Julian said, opening the side entrance to the east wing and stepping inside. "They represent equity. If Aegis controls the medical documentation, Arthur controls whether those kids are legally recognized under the family trust." Marcus was waiting in the living room, setting down a tray with bottled water. He glanced at Julian's face and immediately stepped back. "Marcus," Julian said, unbuttoning his coat. "Get Thomas on the line. I want a full list of Arthur's personal investments in Aegis's parent company within thirty minutes." "Right away, sir," Marcus said, bowing his head before walking quickly down the hall. Evelyn sat down on the edge of the sofa, her hands resting on her lap. The exhaustion was settling in deep, a dull ache behind her eyes, but her mind was spinning. "Explain the math to me," Evelyn said, looking up at him as he stood by the hearth. "He's retired. Why is he fighting his own son over a clinic sample?" "Because six months ago, I forced him off the executive board," Julian said flatly, pulling his phone out. "Arthur spent forty years running Vance International like a personal fiefdom. When the board voted me in as CEO, he took it as a declaration of war." Evelyn looked at him, processing the sheer scale of the mess she had walked into. "So I'm collateral damage in a corporate proxy fight." "You are the deciding factor," Julian corrected, walking over to the coffee table. "Arthur knows that if you carry two Vance heirs without a prenuptial structure or a corporate trust in place, the voting balance of the family holdings shifts permanently." "I don't care about your company!" Evelyn said, her voice rising. "I don't want his stock! I went to a clinic so I could have a family on my own terms without dealing with a man dictating every move I make!" "It doesn't matter what you want, Evelyn," Julian said, his voice flat and firm. "What matters is what my father thinks you can claim. He assumes you're working with me to shut him out of the trust." Evelyn let out a sharp, incredulous breath. "This is absurd. You treat a medical procedure like an aggressive takeover!" "I am treating it like a legal attack, because that's what it is," Julian shot back, stepping toward the table. "My father doesn't hesitate, Evelyn. If he co-signed that injunction, he has a judge on retainer. By nine o'clock tomorrow morning, Aegis will serve a court order for a mandatory medical hold at their facility." Evelyn froze, her chest tightening. "A medical hold? They can't do that." "They can if a judge grants a temporary guardianship order under state donor dispute statutes," Julian said, his eyes fixed on hers. "They will isolate you, take over your medical care, and dictate every piece of paper that gets released." "Then stop them!" Evelyn said, her voice dropping into a tight whisper. "You said you were buying the clinic!" "Acquiring Aegis takes forty-eight hours of regulatory filings," Julian said, pulling a dark leather folder from his inner pocket and placing it on the glass table. "We don't have forty-eight hours. We have until the courthouse opens. Evelyn looked down at the dark folder resting between them. "What is that? "An emergency marriage filing," Julian said cleanly. Evelyn stared at the folder. The room went so quiet that the faint hum of the floor heating sounded loud. "A what?" she asked softly. "A marriage filing," Julian repeated, his voice entirely even. "Prepared by my legal team an hour ago." Evelyn stood up so quickly, her hand knocked against the sofa armrest. "Are you out of your mind?!" "Listen to the legal mechanics" "No!" Evelyn said, backing away from the table. "I am not marrying you! I've known you for less than 14 days" "Under state law, a legal spouse has exclusive, immediate medical power of attorney during a high risk pregnancy," Julian said, stepping around the table, his tone purely analytical. "The moment that document is logged, Arthur's injunction is legally void. A third party clinic cannot override a spouse's medical authority. My lawyers can tear their court order apart before it hits a judge's desk." "You're using a legal crisis to force a marriage contract on me!" Evelyn said, her face hot with anger. "I am using the legal system to block my father from taking control of your care," Julian countered, his tone dropping into a hard, quiet register. "You think I want a rushed filing, Evelyn? You think this is how I manage my schedule?" "Then find a different legal angle!" Evelyn fired back. "There isn't one on this timeline!" Julian said, stepping closer until he was looking straight down at her. "If you walk into a courtroom tomorrow as an unrepresented patient with a contested sample, my father's legal team will dismantle your standing. They'll pull your financial records, your lease history, your ex-boyfriend's arrest report, and they will drag you through the press until you forfeit." Evelyn closed her eyes for a second, swallowing hard. The weight of his words hit her with cold, brutal reality. He wasn't exaggerating. If Daniel could do that much damage with one stolen paper, Arthur Vance had the money to flatten her completely. "I won't sign a standard agreement," Evelyn said, opening her eyes and looking him dead in the eye. "I want my own terms written into the filing." Julian didn't hesitate. "Name them." "One year," Evelyn said, her hands clenched at her sides. "A strict twelve month term. The moment the babies are born and healthy, and your father's legal team is dealt with, we file for a quiet annulment." "Done," Julian said. "Separate living quarters," she continued, pointing at the double doors of the east wing. "This wing stays locked. You do not enter without my explicit consent, paper or no paper." "Agreed." "And joint legal custody," Evelyn added, her voice hardening. "No corporate trusts taking away my parental rights. My signature is required on every major decision." Julian looked at her for a long moment, his expression unreadable, though his jaw relaxed slightly. "The custody addendum is already drafted in the study," Julian said softly. "You can review every line with an independent attorney before putting ink on the page." Evelyn took a slow, steadying breath, her heart hammering against her ribs. She felt like she was stepping onto a moving train with no way to jump off. "Where is the notary?" Evelyn asked quietly. Julian picked up a heavy silver pen from his pocket and set it beside the leather folder. "In the study down the hall," Julian said. "Waiting." Before Evelyn could reach for the pen, three heavy, booming thuds rattled the double doors of the east wing not the polite knock of Marcus, but a loud, authoritative slam. Julian turned his head toward the entrance, his eyes narrowing. Marcus appeared in the archway seconds later, his face completely drained of color. "Mr. Vance," Marcus whispered, his voice tight. "Your father just walked into the main foyer. And he brought the county sheriff with him."
