By sunrise, less than a third of the troops and supply wagons had passed through the gorge. The trail below was clogged by sluggish ox-drawn wagons and plodding packhorses. The Allobroges climbed toward their posts on the crests, only to find them occupied by Carthaginians. After a futile attempt to attack from their lower position, the Allobroges pulled back, then at the sound of an echoing ram’s horn, they swarmed down upon the baggage train.
