On Saturday, I decided to stay home to clean the place and finish editing one of the chapters of the biography I was working on. I promised my editor that she would have this chapter ready to go on Monday morning, and I am sure I will deliver what I promised if I work for the next 4 or 5 hours. I told Mariana that I would be unable to watch baby Natalia, but she said it was OK because they had found a highly recommended babysitter. She said that they gave the sitter my contact information just in case she could not get a hold of them.
Around 5, Mariana called. She seemed upset. My sister said that she thought Ethan managed to get my new address, and Tom and she were on their way to my place, but it would take at least 45 minutes to get here. She said that they left a paper with my phone number and address on the fridge, so the sitter would have my contact information handy if she needed it. Apparently, Ethan told the sitter that he was our cousin (we do not have a cousin in town) and that he needed to get a package for me immediately but misplaced the address. She bought his story and gave him my address.
Mariana begged me to leave the cottage and told me that Tom would deal with Ethan, but I refused. I prefer to confront him myself because this madness needs to stop. He needs to understand that we are over. Mariana told me that she would call Amanda, who lives relatively close by, to ask her to be here as soon as she could. I tried to calm her down, convincing her that I didn't think Ethan was a threat at all, and told her that I would try to see if Paul was home. I hung up with Mariana and called Paul.
-Hi darling. What a beautiful surprise.
-Hi Paul. I think Ethan is on his way here. I will explain later but do you think you can come to my place, just in case? I do not believe he is dangerous but better safe than sorry. Mariana, Tom, and Amanda are on their way, but they are not as close as you are.
-I am on my way, darling. Do not open the door unless it's me.
A few minutes later, I heard the bell. It was Paul. My heart was out of control. I opened the door and what I had in front of me took my breath away. The most beautiful blue eyes I ever saw looking straight at me. We remained looking at each other for what seemed to be a long time. He took my hands, tenderly kissed each one of them, and with his husky voice said:
-Andrea… You are the most beautiful woman I have ever seen.
He was gorgeous, tall, handsome, tanned, and fitted. He was wearing black jeans and a buttoned-down white shirt, with sleeves up, so his arm muscles were on full display. He caressed my cheeks and closed the distance until his soft lips touched mine. At first, the kiss was tender and sweet, but it rapidly became heated. Nobody kissed me that way in my entire life. We ended up breathing heavily and gasping for air.
-Wow…
-Wow indeed, darling. Let's get inside before I rip off your clothes and get charged for public indecency.
I explained to Paul what had happened. I told him that I was not sure if Ethan was on his way but that I did not want to be alone when I confronted him. Soon after, Amanda got here. Paul's presence took her by surprise, and it was clear that he had affected her, as he probably affects most women. I introduced them, and I could see a blushed Amanda, gesturing to let me know how hot she thought Paul was. Ten minutes later, the bell rang once again. Paul asked me to remain inside while he opened the door.
-Hi, said Paul. How may I help you?
-Hello, I am not sure if I got the correct address. I am looking for Andrea.
-Yes, this is Andrea's place. And you are…?
-I am Ethan, Andrea´s fiancée.
-Ahh.. interesting. I am Paul, Andrea's boyfriend. Darling, an Ethan is asking for you.
I went to the door. Paul grabbed me by the waist, gave me a chaste kiss on the forehead, and said:
-Sweety, you forgot to mention that you have a fiancée.
-That is because he is not my fiancée, Paul. Ethan used to be my boyfriend.
-Your cheating ex? asked Paul.
-Yes, that's who he is, I said.
Paul was visibly angry, and his face had such a severe expression that I could see Ethan getting increasingly nervous.
-You have some nerve coming here, man, said Paul. You disrespected the best woman you would ever have, a woman, if I might say, that has moved on, and now you keep stalking her even if she has been crystal clear that you are not getting back together.
I saw Ethan's defeated look, and I have to confess that I felt bad for him. I asked him to come in, and as soon as he did, he saw Amanda, who had her worst I'm gonna kill you look in her face. She lost no time to use her sharp, poisonous tongue, reserved just for the very selected group of people she despises.
-Look who is here. The serial cheater himself. … Don't look at me so shocked, Ethan. I know everything about your regular one-night stands with random chicks you picked while clubbing at Spot. Surprised? You know who the owner of Spot is? My cousin Al, you asshole. He saw an old picture of Andrea and you on my cellphone and said you were a regular at his club. When I told him you have been with Andrea for the past few years and that she just broke up with you, he got shocked. He said that you were with all the easy women he knew and even some men. Do you know what he advised me to do? To urge Andrea to get f*****g tested for STDs, you moron! And yet, you dare to show your face here. Fortunately, Andrea is with Paul now, a real man who values and respects her.
Ethan was pale, and it took some time until he composed himself. In the meantime, Paul held me tight and didn't let go. An awkward silence took over the place until I decided to speak.
-Ethan, why are you here?
-I thought I still had a chance with you. That you were telling me that you didn't want me back because you were mad at me, but that eventually, you were going to forgive me. I even bought an engagement ring. I still love you, you know? You are it for me.
-I am sorry, Ethan, but we are not going to get back together. Since we broke up, I have been working on rebuilding my life. I am more confident and happier than I have ever been. Paul has been my rock; he made me realize that I needed things that I had no idea I wanted and helped me build my self-confidence. He makes me feel sexy and valued. Paul told me that I should be worshiped. He makes me feel special. I will always be grateful that you were there for me in the saddest, more difficult time of my life, and I know that you loved me in your own way. But I need different things now. I have to be with someone who appreciates and respects me, and that someone is Paul. Goodbye Ethan. I hope that one day you find what you are looking for.
-Goodbye, Andrea. I will always love you.
And with that, Ethan left, and I had the suspicion that he was not coming back this time. I do not know when Mariana and Tom got in. Mariana was weeping; she approached me, kissed my cheeks, and held Paul tight.
-Thank you, Paul, she said; I am Mariana, Andrea's sister.
-Hi Mariana. I know Andrea is important to you, and I want you to know that everything she said is true. I am crazy about her. I am smitten with her, you know, and if she lets me, I will be here for the long haul.
His words resonated deep inside. I held him tight and kissed him again and again. It was like we had been together forever, even if we met in person less than an hour ago. Paul's next words took me by surprise.
-I do not know about you guys, but all this Ethan thing got me anxious, and when I get anxious, I need food. I live just around the corner. Why don't you come to my place for dinner and drinks? We can barbecue some burgers and prepare a couple of salads if you want.
Mariana and Paul talked to the babysitter and said they could stay for the next two hours, and Amanda had no plans, so we all headed to Paul's place. I was surrounded by all the people I deeply cared about. I never felt happier.
