CHAPTER 6: THE ALPHA WHO COULD NOT IGNORE ME

611 Words
Kael moved. The second, my power rose again. He stepped in front of the elders, placing himself between me and them, his posture firm, his eyes locked on mine with full attention. “Stand down,” he ordered. But I did not. The energy inside me pounded again, stronger than before, pressing against my chest as if it was trying to break free completely. I cannot control it, I said. Kael’s eyes sharpened. Then you need to learn, he replied. The elders reacted immediately. “She is a threat,” one of them said. “She must be contained now.” Kael did not turn to them. No, he said. The word landed with authority. I will handle this, he added. You already handled it, I said. “You rejected me.” This is not about that anymore, he said, but it was. The voice inside me stirred again. He is lying. My chest tightened slightly. Kael stepped closer. You are coming with me, he said. I shook my head. “No.” The ground beneath us trembled again. You do not get to decide for me anymore, I added. The space between us shifted in a way that felt sharper than before, and this time, it was not just the power inside me reacting, but something deeper, something that refused to step back again. I watched him closely, not as someone I trusted, but as someone I now had to understand. You are trying to control something you do not understand, I said. My voice remained calm, but there was weight behind it now. Kael did not look away. I understand enough, he replied. But I could hear it. The uncertainty beneath his words. The realization settled quietly in my mind, and once it did, I could not ignore it. He was not leading this anymore, he was reacting. The power inside me responded to that shift, not rising wildly, but stabilizing, as if it recognized the change before I fully did. I straightened slightly, my breathing steady, my thoughts clearer than they had been moments ago. For so long, I had stood beneath him, waiting to be chosen, waiting to belong. But now, I see it clearly. I was not the one being judged anymore. I was the one being watched. And that changed the balance between us in a way neither of us could undo. Kael’s eyes darkened. Then I will make you, he said. The space between us tightened as his words settled, and for a moment, neither of us moved, but the air felt heavier, charged with something neither of us fully understood anymore. I held his look, searching for something familiar, something that reminded me of the person I once trusted, but the distance between us had already grown too wide. You do not trust me, I said quietly. Kael did not answer immediately, and that silence gave me everything I needed to know. This is not about trust, he said at last, but his voice lacked the certainty it once carried. My chest tightened slightly, but not from pain this time. From clarity. Everything is about trust, I replied. The power inside me stirred again, not violently, but steadily, responding to the shift in my thoughts as if it understood what I had just accepted. I took a small step back, not out of fear, but because I needed space, needed distance from him and everything he represented. For the first time, I realized something clearly. I was not the one who had lost control. And for the first time, he reached out for me like I was not someone he once cared about.
