The mansion was unusually quiet.
Even the staff whispered as they moved through the long hallways of Blackwood Manor. News of the attack had spread quickly, and everyone knew that the danger surrounding the Blackwood family was growing.
Amara sat alone in the library, turning the silver pendant over in her hands. The engraving still sent chills down her spine.
She finally remembers us.
She had spent the entire night trying to remember where she had seen it before. Memories flickered in fragments—a woman's gentle laugh, a warm embrace, a melody her mother used to hum—but every time she reached for the truth, it slipped away.
A soft knock interrupted her thoughts.
Helen entered carrying a tray of breakfast.
"You didn't sleep, did you?"
Amara shook her head.
"I keep feeling like someone is watching me."
Helen placed the tray on the table and sighed.
"Sometimes the past has a way of catching up with us."
"What do you mean?"
Helen looked as though she wanted to say more, but instead she smiled sadly.
"Eat something."
Before Amara could ask another question, Helen quietly left the room.
At Blackwood Global, Damian was furious.
The boardroom was filled with senior executives, cybersecurity experts, and his head of security.
"The attackers disappeared without leaving a trace," one officer reported.
"They knew exactly where our cameras were positioned."
"They also knew our response time."
Damian's eyes narrowed.
"So we have a traitor."
No one spoke.
His gaze swept across the room.
"I don't care who it is."
"When I find them..."
"They're finished."
His phone vibrated.
It was Helen.
"Sir..."
"I think Mrs. Blackwood is about to discover something."
Back at the manor, Amara wandered through the west wing, a part of the house she had never explored before.
She remembered Damian's warning.
Never enter my private office.
But something kept pulling her toward it.
The hallway ended at a pair of dark wooden doors.
She hesitated.
"I shouldn't."
Yet curiosity won.
She gently pushed the door open.
The office was elegant and surprisingly personal. Bookshelves covered one wall, while framed awards and photographs lined another.
A large oak desk stood in the center of the room.
Everything was perfectly organized.
Almost.
One drawer wasn't fully closed.
Amara told herself she would only push it shut.
Instead, she noticed a corner of an old leather notebook sticking out.
She slowly pulled it free.
The cover was worn with age.
There were no words on the front.
She opened it.
The first page read:
"If anything happens to me, this diary must reach my daughter."
Amara's breath caught.
The handwriting...
She knew it.
It belonged to her mother.
Her hands trembled as she turned the page.
"My dearest Amara,
If you are reading this, it means I could not protect you. There are people who will lie to you about who you are. They will tell you that your family died in an accident. Don't believe them.
The truth is far more dangerous.
If the Blackwood family ever finds you... trust only one of them."
Tears blurred Amara's vision.
Her mother had written this years before she died.
Why had Damian hidden it?
Before she could continue reading, footsteps echoed in the hallway.
She quickly closed the diary.
The office door opened.
Damian stood there.
For a long moment, neither of them spoke.
His eyes fell to the diary in her hands.
"You went into my office."
"I'm sorry."
"I told you not to."
"I know."
"Then why?"
She held up the diary, tears streaming down her cheeks.
"Because it belongs to my mother."
Damian froze.
His expression softened.
He slowly walked toward her.
"I was waiting for the right time."
"The right time?"
"You should have told me!"
"I wanted to protect you."
She laughed bitterly.
"Protect me?"
"I've been attacked."
"I've been threatened."
"And now I find out you've been hiding my mother's diary?"
Damian closed his eyes.
"I wasn't hiding it from you."
"I was hiding it from them."
"The people who killed your parents."
Silence filled the room.
Amara's voice barely rose above a whisper.
"My parents..."
"They were murdered?"
Damian nodded once.
"Yes."
Her legs gave way.
She collapsed into the chair beside the desk, unable to process what she had just heard.
All her life she had believed they had died in a tragic car accident.
Now everything she knew was unraveling.
Damian knelt beside her.
"I'm sorry."
She looked at him through tear-filled eyes.
"You knew all this time."
"Yes."
"And you said nothing."
"I made a promise."
"To who?"
He hesitated.
"Your mother."
Before Amara could respond, a deafening alarm echoed throughout the mansion.
Red emergency lights began flashing.
Helen's voice came over the intercom.
"Mr. Blackwood!"
"We have intruders!"
"They've breached the east gate!"
Gunfire erupted outside.
The windows shook from another explosion.
Damian immediately pulled Amara behind the desk.
"Stay here!"
"I'm not leaving you!"
"You don't have a choice."
He handed her the diary.
"No matter what happens..."
"Don't let anyone take this."
Another explosion rocked the mansion.
Then the study door burst open.
A masked man stepped inside.
He wasn't carrying a gun.
He was smiling.
"You've kept her hidden long enough, Damian."
His eyes settled on Amara.
"It's time for the heiress to come home."
End of Chapter 6.
Cliffhanger: The mysterious intruder knows Amara's true identity and calls her "the heiress." But what inheritance is he talking about, and why has someone been hunting her since childhood?
