The hooded figure slipped through the shadows of the castle's innermost chambers. Few knew of this hidden passage or dared trespass this deep. But he, who had mastered so many secrets, moved with practiced ease. The wall torches remained unlit, leaving patches of impenetrable darkness. He preferred it thus, even with his robes' enchantments that blurred the eye and muffled any sound. One could never be too cautious, especially when coming to meet the Master.
There, beyond the etched obsidian door sealed by blood magics - his sanctuary. The spy paused, steadying his breath, settling his mind's defenses. He would reveal only what he must.
At his touch, the door dissolved to smoke, permitting entry. The chamber's sole light came from sigils smoldering purple-black upon the floor, etching the Master's silhouette.
"Come, my friend," the Dark Mage Berus rasped, shadows writhing at his feet. "I trust you bring favorable news?"
The spy halted just beyond the sigils' haze and inclined his head. "Indeed, my lord. Chaos spreads its tendrils as you foretold. Eldore and Valencia stand poised to destroy one another."
"And you have ensured the princeling plays his part?" Berus asked.
"Cato proves an apt pupil, ambitious and pliable. He believes the skirmishes his own plotting, never doubting the thoughts we seeded."
Berus chuckled, a sinister susurration. "Hubris blinds the minds of men. He shall serve our ends well enough for now."
The spy was careful to still his own thoughts, projecting only deference and zeal for their shared purpose. But questions burned within. To what ultimate end did all this chaos lead? For whose gain?
The Master seemed content to ravage the realms, caring not if they burned. But there must be more to his machinations, things yet concealed. The spy would uncover all in time - knowledge was his craft.
"And King Leon?" Berus asked. "Does he prepare for war?"
"The old lion still clings to hopes of peace. But his pride has been pricked. With the right provocations, he will unleash Valeria's might against Eldore."
"Good, good." The Master rubbed bone-white hands. "Let them fracture each other so we need only pick the spoils."
The spy chose his next words carefully. "There are...complications. Leon's heir, the princess Annaliese - her powers grow stronger. She glimpses threads even I cannot trace. We must act swiftly before--"
Darkness suddenly coiled around his throat, choking his breath. The temperature plummeted, sigils flaring in response to their Master's displeasure.
"Do not presume to counsel me, worm," Berus snarled. "You play at games of whispers and deceit. I have toppled kingdoms, decimated worlds! All will proceed according to my design."
The pressure released and the spy gasped gratefully for air. He prostrated himself. "Forgive me, Master. I spoke out of turn, fearful for our cause. Your wisdom exceeds my own."
"See that you remember it." The Dark Mage composed himself once more. "We have pawns better positioned to deal with this princess should she prove problematic. For now, cleave to your assigned task - ensure Cato drives Eldore's court to frenzy."
The spy nodded, keeping any further objections sealed behind his mental barriers. But privately, he seethed at being denied access to Princess Annaliese. Her powers would be useful to study more closely. Still, he must not overplay his hand.
"I live but to serve," he said instead. "Though, if I may ask, how goes the effort with King Adalric's gifted son?" Casually probed, as if mere idle curiosity rather than vital intelligence.
Berus chuckled once more. "Ah, Daemon. Already he submits to the temptation of his darker nature. The boy manifested wondrous talents even in the cradle. Once his soul is wholly mine, he will help unleash such beautiful carnage."
So the Master sought a vessel through which to channel his profane powers into the world. The spy carefully tucked away this insight, though Berus believed his secrets closely guarded.
The time would come to decide where his true loyalties lay. For now, patience and prudence. He could not proceed recklessly, not yet fully aware of the forces arrayed across this chessboard. But the shadows held no mysteries to daunt him. Their secrets would be brought to light, one way or another. Long live the Queen.
