Ta, ta, ta, ta, ta...
Ta, ta, ta...
Echoes from the rattling of the vintage typewriter are the chorus for the silent atmosphere of the workstation. It is always operated by the company clerk, Ms. Andrea. Her eyeglasses framing her youthful innocent features, with her brown wavy curls reaching her hips, she would be a campus sweetheart if she were studying in a college instead of working.
However, Ms. Andrea isn't the subject.
An hour towards the end of their office hours was total agony for Elena.
The thumping of the array of keys is giving a headache to Elena today. She couldn't concentrate on the containers of her paperwork. Clutters of freshly developed photos spread on her dark grey work desk, while her pointless doodles create a faint dry scratching sound on a paper.
She couldn't find any trace of Theo's image captured from the pictures she took on that very day...
Theo, she missed seeing him again, at least once. The expectation of him suddenly appearing in front of her for the past few days seemed like a hopeless, crazy idea now. Despair is the only word that could describe her feelings now. In a flash, Theo took the dark shadow of Tony into her heart, yet he is also the source of pain in her heart.
She quickly wipes off the little tear drops from the corner of her eyes, begging herself to not cry in that very office.
Tracing the scar on her shin beneath the garment, she struggled to return to the day again with eyes fluttering shut. Putting every piece of the vivid image of him into a picture. The way he looks, his warm smile, and his voice from the short time of their encounter. She wanted to memorize every part of him.
The wound she got from the incident was only a minor scratch which healed after a few days. Leaving only a faint scar afterward. Though she recollects reminiscences of terrible radiating pain and his invalid super fast speed, the scar proves his existence. It doesn't matter if he is a ghost or an alien, she is longing to see Theo again.
However, by now, she seems to start to believe that she is only hallucinating the event. That Theo is only a projection in his own mind due to the daunting break-up with Tony. Probably she was all alone on that day until her elder brother, Edward, with the search party found her in the forest.
If things had escalated into such a mess, Elena had become afraid that she might start to lose her mind because of Tony.
She couldn't be this weakling, just because a man she pointlessly loved for years betrayed her, she told herself.
Putting the pencil down, she arranged the photos aside. Clearing her desk in an attempt to distract her chaotic mind with the few pending folders of paperwork at the corner of her desk.
A navy blue folder beneath the other folders attracted her attention.
This was a special invitation for a documentary she received a month ago to Xuhetti country, the land that had recently gained its independence from years of unending civil war. The company decided to venture for a fresh topic and develop a new team on the project for a period of approximately 30 days, and she is one of the chosen respondents to accomplish the mission.
Taking a grip of the folder, she gazed at the wall clock, having about 50 minutes before their office hour end. Leaving her desk, she proceeds to the manager's room, Ms. Enya.
"Ms. Enya," Elena knocked on her ajar door for approval to let her in.
She looked up, having a little surprise at Elena's sudden appeal, yet she nodded in affirmation.
"Elena, yes anything I can help." She uttered, putting aside her reading glass.
"Ms. Enya, regarding the invitation," Elena paused, putting the folder on her desk in front of her. "Please, count me in."
Enya takes a moment to absorb the details, a line of curiosity draws across her arched brows.
In her 40's, Enya Douglas is stunning in her tenacious and persistent characteristics. The minimal volume of makeup blends well with her smooth, bright glassy skin. A tough, lean figure doesn't mean having a lack of styles, her midnight sleek black hair left loose flowed over her shoulder, a part of her hair neatly sweeps behind the ear, a golden hairpin to secure it in place.
"Well, are you sure about this? I'm afraid it might be a little too rushed for you." Enya asked her sudden decision.
"How rushed is it?"
"Well, the team has been set up and ready to deploy this Friday." She explained, with a wave of joy pleated in her tone. "We already have Albert to cover this, but you have been one of our best journalists, and I'm confident that both of you will be a perfect duo!"
Albert had been her partner while she was still on probation with the company. He had inspired her ever since, and of course, working with him on this project would make a great change in her career.
"This Friday will be two days from now. It shouldn't be a problem for me, Ms. Enya." Elena stood firm on her decision. A month would be enough to get her mind out of Theon or Tony. The challenging task is what it takes to knock her off of the craziness.
"Great! I didn't expect you would be interested in this project because I haven't heard from you ever since."
"I apologize, Ms. Enya. I was out of my mind for some reason, but I'm sane now. Let me join them."
"No problem at all, Elena. Things happen but we have to go on, am I right? I will include you in their final meeting tomorrow." She smiled brightly, extending a hand, she said, "Welcome to the team, Elena Silas."
Elena accepted the waiting palm, "Thank you, Ms. Enya, I will do well."
If she is going crazy, then let it be in a better way. Elena told herself again.
Holding her handbag closer to her body, she inserted the heavy time card into the time clock slot before leaving the building.
Dragging her feet, she headed to the exit. Today is the day when she doesn't want to be with any of her colleagues, and so she purposely takes her time to get ready for home. The thought of returning to the apartment she had lived in with Tony to collect her passport depressed her.
Being alone doesn't make her any happy, so what is the point now?
Does heartbreak really give her this lingering feeling? It hurts and is unbearable, something is just stuck inside of her, begging to be let out.
"Elena."
A voice calling her name over has her stayed glued in place.
Does she have another episode of hallucination again?
"Elena Silas." He repeated, his footstep halted. This time, he is standing right behind her.
Theo is that you..?
