Chapter Thirteen It was the whip that woke me, a burst of fire on my thigh, shattering my nightmare haunted slumber to rouse me, screaming. Daphne’s return had been intentionally silent, a rude surprise. I had been curled into a fetal ball to conserve heat, for the dank chill of the place had denied me rest until simple exhaustion stole my consciousness.
