The war between men

1428 Words
Hudson Blake Hudson Blake didn’t like being ignored. It wasn’t just a preference, it was something deeper. Something wired into him in a way that made control feel like oxygen. Necessary. Non-negotiable. And right now? He was losing it. The city stretched out beneath him through the glass walls of his office, but he wasn’t looking at it. His attention was fixed on the phone in his hand, jaw tight, eyes dark with something dangerously close to rage. Valerie hadn’t picked up his calls. Not once. Not after everything. That alone was enough to irritate him. But what made it worse. What made something cold coil in his chest Was the one piece of information he hadn’t been able to shake since last night. She had gone to Alessandro. Hudson’s grip on his phone tightened. Of all people. Alessandro Rossi. The name alone was enough to sour his mood. Because Alessandro wasn’t just another man. He was a problem. Always had been. Even back in college, when things had seemed simpler, Hudson had noticed him. He was Quiet, Observant. The kind of man who didn’t need to compete for attention because he didn’t care for it. And somehow… that made him stand out more. Hudson had never trusted men like that. Men who watched instead of spoke. Men who calculated instead of reacted. Men who didn’t need validation. Because those were the ones you couldn’t control. And now, that same man had Valerie. Hudson exhaled sharply, running a hand through his hair. No. Not had. Valerie was still his wife. That hadn’t changed. Nothing had changed. She was just… upset. That was all. And Valerie, for all her strength, had always been emotional when it came to him. She would calm down. She always did. But then his mind replayed the image again, Valerie walking out. Not looking back. Not hesitating. And something in his chest tightened in a way he didn’t like. That… wasn’t normal. His phone buzzed again. Another ignored call. Another unanswered message. Hudson’s patience snapped. He grabbed his keys and walked out of the office without a second thought. If Valerie wasn’t picking up, He would go to her. And if she wasn’t there? Then he already knew where she would be. Alessandro’s penthouse. The drive was fast. Too fast. Hudson barely registered the traffic lights, the turns, the distance. All he could think about was one thing— Her. And him. By the time he stepped into the building, his expression had already settled into something cold and controlled. The receptionist greeted him politely, but he didn’t respond. Didn’t need to. He already knew where he was going. The elevator ride up felt longer than it should have. Each second stretched. Each passing floor tightening something inside him. By the time the doors opened, Hudson Blake was done waiting. He didn’t knock. He pushed the door open. And stepped inside. The first thing he saw— Was Valerie. She was standing near the window, her back partially turned, but he recognized her instantly. The way she held herself. Strong. But not untouched. There was something different about her now. Something colder. Something distant. And then, He saw him. Alessandro. Standing beside her. Too close. The air shifted the moment Hudson stepped in. It was heavy, tense and dangerous. Valerie turned slowly. Their eyes met. For a moment, Just a moment, Something flickered between them. History, pain and love. But it was gone just as quickly. Replaced by something sharper. Something harder. “You finally decided to show up,” Hudson said. His voice was calm. But there was an edge beneath it. Valerie didn’t respond immediately. She just looked at him. And that silence? It irritated him more than any words could have. Alessandro stepped forward slightly. it was not aggressively. Not defensively. He was Just… present. That alone made Hudson’s gaze shift to him. “Rossi.” His tone carried no warmth. Alessandro met his eyes evenly. “Blake.” There was no tension in his voice, No emotion. And somehow, that was worse. Hudson let out a quiet scoff. “So this is where you’ve been.” His eyes flicked briefly to Valerie. “Running to him now?” Valerie’s expression didn’t change. “I didn’t run.” Her voice was calm. Steady. “I left.” The words landed harder than they should have. Hudson’s jaw tightened. “There’s a difference?” “Yes,” she said simply. “Running means I plan to go back.” Silence. That… wasn’t what he expected. Hudson’s gaze darkened slightly. “You’re angry.” Valerie almost smiled. Almost. “Is that what you think this is?” “What else would it be?” he replied. She let out a soft breath. Not frustrated or emotional. Just… tired. “This isn’t anger, Hudson.” Her eyes held his. “It’s clarity.” And for the first time since he walked in. Hudson felt something shift. Something small but noticeable. His attention turned back to Alessandro. “You,” he said quietly. “I should have known.” Alessandro didn’t react. “Known what?” he asked calmly. “That you’d take advantage of this.” That did it. A flicker of something crossed Alessandro’s eyes. Not anger. Not exactly. But something close. “I’m not you,” he said. The words were simple. But they carried weight. Hudson laughed. A low mocking laugh. “Is that supposed to mean something?” “It means,” Alessandro replied, his voice still steady, “that not every man sees an opportunity in someone else’s pain.” That hit. Hudson’s smile faded slightly. “You think that’s what this is?” he asked. Alessandro didn’t answer. He didn’t need to. Hudson stepped closer. Now the distance between them was smaller. “You’ve been waiting for this, haven’t you?” Hudson continued. Alessandro’s gaze didn’t waver. “No.” Hudson scoffed again. “Don’t you dare lie to me” “I’m not, why would I.” A pause. “I’ve been waiting for her to see the truth.” That was it. That was the moment something snapped. Hudson’s expression hardened completely.“You don’t get to talk about my wife like that.” Alessandro’s voice dropped slightly. “Then maybe you should have treated her like she mattered.” There was a sharp, cutting silence. Valerie stood between them now. Not physically. But in everything that wasn’t being said. In every word. Every accusation. Every truth. Hudson’s eyes flicked to her again. “You believe him?” Valerie didn’t hesitate. “I believe what I’ve seen.” “And what have you seen?” he challenged. Her gaze didn’t break. “I’ve seen enough, Hudson .” Hudson let out a slow controlled breath. “This isn’t you.” Valerie tilted her head slightly. “No?” “No,” he said firmly. “You don’t just walk away from things like this.” Something in her expression changed. Subtly but noticeably. “You’re right,” she said quietly. “I don’t.” There was pause. “But I do walk away from lies.” That landed harder than anything else. Hudson’s gaze darkened again. But this time, There was something else beneath it. Something unfamiliar. Something close to Loss. He looked at Alessandro one more time. And this time, there was no mockery. No amusement. Just something cold. “You think you’ve won something here?” Alessandro didn’t answer immediately. “This was never a competition.” Hudson’s lips curved slightly. “It is now.” The words lingered in the air. Promising something neither of them said out loud. Valerie exhaled softly. “And what do you think you’re saying Hudson? I’m not a prize.” Both men went silent. Because that was the truth they couldn’t argue with. But still. The tension remained. Because this was never just about her. It was about power, control and ego. Everything men like them didn’t easily let go of. Hudson stepped back slightly. His gaze still locked on Alessandro. “This isn’t over.” Alessandro’s expression didn’t change. He felt like punching this b*st*rd, he still had the mind to come see Valerie and act like nothing happened, like he didn’t cheat on her for years and plan to take everything she has while she depends on him. But he had to hold himself for Valerie’s sake, if not this i***t would be covered in blood. And just like that— The war had begun.
