The truth she planted

Cindy Laurent The moment the elevator doors closed behind her, Cindy exhaled. Slowly. Deliberately. Like she had just walked out of a battlefield and won. Her reflection stared back at her in the mirrored walls. Perfect hair. Perfect makeup. Not a single crack in her composure. But inside? Her thoughts were anything but calm. A slow smile curved her lips. Valerie Blake. Even now, Cindy could still see the look in her eyes, the shock, anger, disbelief… and something even more dangerous. Doubt. Perfect. Cindy leaned back against the elevator wall, crossing her arms as it descended smoothly. She hadn’t lied. Not completely. That was the beauty of it. The truth, when twisted just enough, became far more powerful than any outright lie. Valerie now knew Hudson had cheated. She knew about the children. She knew about the Blake family’s interest in her company. All true. But what Cindy had carefully avoided telling her? That was where the real game began. The elevator doors opened into the quiet lobby, but Cindy barely noticed the surroundings as she walked out. Her heels clicked softly against the polished floor, each step measured, confident. Controlled. Everything she did was controlled. Because unlike Valerie, Cindy didn’t have the luxury of reacting emotionally. She had too much to lose. Her children. Her future. Her place. She stepped outside into the cool night air and pulled out her phone. The screen lit up instantly. One name sat at the top of her messages. Hudson. Her thumb hovered over it for a second. Then she tapped. Cindy: It’s done. The reply came almost immediately. Hudson: Already? Her lips curved. Of course he would respond fast. Hudson always did when it came to control. Cindy: She knows. A pause. Then— Hudson: Everything? Cindy’s smile deepened. Everything? No. Not everything, she said to herself Not even close. Cindy: Enough. She slipped into her car, shutting the door quietly before starting the engine. The city stretched out before her as she pulled into traffic, lights flickering across her windshield like a moving illusion. Hudson’s next message came through. Hudson: What exactly did you tell her? Cindy laughed softly under her breath. He was nervous. Good. Let him be. Cindy: Relax. I told her what she needed to hear. Another pause. Longer this time. Hudson: Cindy… The warning in that single word made her eyes narrow slightly. There it was. The control. The tone he always used when he wanted to remind her of her place. For a moment, something cold flickered in her chest. Five years. Five years of being exactly what he wanted. Soft when he needed comfort. Obedient when he wanted control. Desirable when he needed distraction. And now? Now he thought he could just discard her? Her grip on the steering wheel tightened slightly. Not happening. Cindy: Don’t start. She turned into a quieter street, her voice low as if he could somehow hear her through the message. Cindy: You wanted her to find out eventually. I just… sped things up. This time, Hudson didn’t respond immediately. Cindy’s eyes flicked to the screen briefly. Then back to the road. She knew what he was thinking. He was Calculating. Adjusting. Planning his next move. That’s what Hudson did best. He was always thinking ten steps ahead. But so was she. And that was something he had forgotten. Finally, his message came. Hudson: You went behind my back. Cindy’s laugh was soft. Dangerous. Cindy: Oh, now you care about loyalty? The hypocrisy amused her. A man who had been living a double life for years suddenly concerned about betrayal. Pathetic. Her phone buzzed again. Hudson: This wasn’t part of the plan. Cindy’s smile faded slightly. Of course it wasn’t. Because Hudson’s plans always revolved around himself. Never anyone else. Not Valerie. Not her. Not even his own children. She pulled over to the side of the road, putting the car in park. Then she typed slowly but Carefully. Cindy: You don’t have a plan anymore, Hudson. She hit send. And waited. This time, his reply took longer. Much longer. When it finally came, it was just two words. Hudson: Explain that. Cindy leaned back in her seat, her eyes staring out into the night. “Because,” she whispered softly to herself, “you’re predictable.” Her fingers moved across the screen again. Cindy: You were going to keep lying to her. Drag it out. Control everything like you always do. Her jaw tightened slightly. Cindy: But that doesn’t work for me anymore. There it was. The truth. Not the one she gave Valerie. The real one. She wasn’t doing this for revenge. Not entirely. She was doing it for survival. Her phone buzzed again. Hudson: You’re making a mistake. Cindy’s eyes darkened. “No,” she murmured. “I’m correcting one.” She typed again. Cindy: No. I’m making sure I don’t end up as your biggest one. Silence followed. But Cindy wasn’t worried. She knew Hudson. Knew the way his mind worked. Right now, he was angry. Confused. But beneath that? He was calculating how to regain control. And that was exactly what she wanted. Because Hudson Blake had one fatal flaw. He hated losing control. And Valerie? Valerie had just slipped out of his grasp. Cindy smiled slowly. Good. Let him chase her. Let him try to fix things. Let him think he could still manipulate her. Because the more he pushed… The more Valerie would pull away. And the deeper the damage would go. Cindy picked up her phone again, her fingers hovering for a moment before she opened another contact. A different name. One Hudson didn’t know about. One she had kept hidden. For years. Her lips curved slightly as she pressed call. The line rang once. Twice. Then— “Hello?” A male voice. Calm. Controlled and Familiar. Cindy’s smile widened. “It’s time,” she said softly. A pause. Then— “Are you sure?” Her eyes hardened. “Very.” Another pause. Then the man spoke again. “And Hudson?” Cindy leaned back, her gaze turning cold. “Let him think he’s still in control.” Her voice dropped to a whisper. “Until everything falls apart.” She ended the call and stared out into the darkness. Valerie thought she had uncovered the truth. Hudson thought he could still fix everything. Alessandro thought he could protect Valerie. They were all wrong. Because none of them understood one thing. This wasn’t just about love. Or betrayal. Or revenge. This was about legacy. About power. About names that would either be remembered… or erased. Cindy placed a hand lightly over her stomach, her expression softening just for a moment. “My children won’t be hidden,” she whispered.“They won’t be called mistakes.” Her eyes hardened again. “They will have his name.” No matter what it cost. And somewhere deep inside her mind, a dangerous thought formed. If Hudson refused to give her that future willingly… Then she would take it.
