Once outside, Michael checked Zoe’s car just to make sure the keys weren’t in it. They weren’t, so he had no choice but to head up to the campsite on foot. It took long minutes, more than he had to waste, and when he reached the camp, it looked abandoned. He climbed the trail up to the dig, and when he reached the top, he saw Irina and Zoe on the edge of the pit. “What are you doing here, Irina?”
Irina jerked her head toward him as he approached. Her smile was bright, as if she were happy to see him. “We were looking for you! Your friend Bethany is quite sick. She started bleeding again and when I tried to help her, she thought I was attacking her, that I was one of … them.” A true look of worry settled on her face. “We need to get her to a hospital.”
