The study fell into silence after Ezio Conti left.
Romano looked at his coffee.
Luca looked at the door.
“He liked you,” Romano said.
“He liked that I corrected him,” Luca said.
“Same thing,” Romano said.
They sat in the study for a moment in the particular quiet of two men who had just received something significant and were sitting with the weight of it before the next thing arrived.
“The Marchettis,” Romano said eventually.
“I know,” Luca said.
“If Santino moves before we’re ready—”
“He won’t,” Luca said.
Romano looked at him.
“How do you know that?”
Luca thought about Victor’s report. About cautious men and right moments and forty men assembled and waiting for the signal.
“Because cautious men wait for certainty,” he said. “And I am not going to give him certainty.”
