Gideon was the Lycan Prince of the Noble Crest pack and three years older than me. He was more revered and feared than anyone else in the school, as much as I detested to say it. However, I was relieved that after years of conflict, wolves and lycans were not permitted to mingle at school.
Aggressive and prone to losing control, lycans would destroy anyone who got in their way. Whether or whether they mated, they were vengeful beings that staked claims on girls. As the Alpha's son, I kept the peace at school by ensuring that there was a separation.
"Scarlet is the subject." Calmly, he said. Gideon could not read minds, though. How could he already be aware of the mate bond? I was not even certain that he should be aware of Scarlet our identity.
"Whom?"
His eyebrows shot upward. "Your partner."
I gave him a long, hard look. "How about her?"
"Did you turn her down?"
"Not at all. Not just yet." He must have known that I would not accept it if he was aware of the mating tie. But for him, why did any of this matter? "Why are you worrying about Scarlet now?"
"You must turn her down." I was beginning to feel uneasy.
"Why?" To attempt to decide things for me, who did he think he was? What the devil thought he was talking to me?
After a long period of silence, he turned to face me with a smile.
Josh, you can not play with her. You have Sandra as a girlfriend, and I am sure she provides you with plenty entertainment. Try to avoid Scarlet as much as possible."
I was beginning to lose my temper. She is my partner, and I can do anything I want with her. You can speak now if you have anything else to say, or...
Before I could say anything more, Gideon pushed me against the wall and put his hands around my throat. "Hear me out, Josh. I am aware that you do not intend to adore her to the extent that she merits. So just back off, or I will deal with you."
I moved him away from me and straightened my shirt. He had dark veins encircling his fiery red eyes. That was the only manner I had ever seen a Lycan—when he was protecting his mate or attempting to take her back from someone else. However, how is that possible? How could his mate be my Scarlet? Could he really try to wrest her away from me?
"I can tell you want her based on your reaction." Rubbing my elbow, I said. But fortunately, I have changed my mind because she approached me first. I am going to brand her and claim her.
Gideon faced away from me, his body trembling with anger and his hands clinched next to him. "If you damage her, I am going to cut out your throat." After that, he left without turning around.
"s**t!" Before I could stop myself, I punched through the wall with my fist. A wave of pure wrath overcame me as I thought about Gideon's warning. How on earth could he get into my land to threaten me? "I am not going to let him get her," I said, mocking his attempt to seize my partner.
Are you in here, Josh? When Sandra poked her head through the creaking door, it opened. "Why do you remain hidden in the dressing room?" With a sigh, I swallowed a curse. The last person I needed to see was her.
Sandra approached me and stood there, filling my nose with the aroma of high-end fragrances and shampoo. She smelled nothing like Scarlet, who smelled like vanilla and naturally damp roses, as I sadly realised.
"It is a mystery to me that you located her," She was gently tapping her foot with her hands on her waist.
I put my arms around her and pretended to be happy. "Because I did not feel that telling you was necessary. I did, after all, intend to turn her down."
"You have plans? Is it true that you turned her down and she accepted it?
Maintaining eye contact was difficult, particularly when I was considering telling her a lie. "I told her we could not be together, even though I didn't. She pleaded with me not to reject her, saying that if I do, the pack will expel her."
Sandra turned away from me, anger and coldness in her gaze. The grimace that twisted her face was malevolent. "When we found our mates, we vowed to reject them. Do you not think that this is a betrayal of me? Why do you prefer that freak to me?"
I got up and, exasperated, ran my fingers through my hair. Gideon was probably using every minute I was wasting with her as an opportunity to get closer to Scarlet.
"I swear, tomorrow I will turn her down." It was simpler to tell the falsehood than the truth. "I just wanted to avoid hurting her too much. She is probably crying uncontrollably now."
With a sigh, she put her hands on my chest. "I do not want to share you with anyone; you are mine." She put her hands around my neck and forced her lips to mine. In addition, I have already looked after her. She would be afraid to approach you in the future."
I shoved Sandra away from me without thinking. How did you treat her? Tell me. I got up and my voice boomed through the room. "Where is she now?"
"She is at the rear of the cafeteria; we just are." She felt uneasy. "Gideon prevented us from causing her harm."
"How did you do that?" Without waiting for a response, I hurried from the room to the corridor. Gideon could not separate us from each other.
"Her capacity for mending is fading. The medications will only provide her with short-term relief."
I slowly opened my eyes and took a quick look around the space. I knew I was in the school's clinic by the dark lighting and the strong smell of disinfectant.
I was lying on the bed with a bandage over my head.
"What might be preventing her from healing?" I heard the newcomer question the nurse. I glanced over to look at them, but instead I moaned in agony and caught their attention.
"Oh, at last, she is awake." As she moved in closer to me, the nurse remarked.
She tilted my head to look at my wound and her eyes furrowed. "By now, this should have healed, but it hasn't."
She was accurate. After a few minutes, my wound should heal completely thanks to my wolf healing powers. It was not supposed to hurt every time I breathed or to have me covered in bandages. What had been terribly wrong with me?
"What is the matter with me?" I muttered, feebly.
"You have some fractured ribs and sustained a little concussion," she said icily as she pressed her fingers against my ribcage.
However, you should not be too concerned about that. Prince Gideon brought you here on time, and you are really lucky."
