THE FIRST LOOK

636 Words
Olivia had never imagined herself at a party like this. For sixteen years, she had avoided anything that involved loud music, alcohol, or people making reckless decisions. She had seen enough to know how quickly one bad choice could change someone's life forever. While most teenagers counted down the days until the next party, Olivia preferred spending her Friday nights with a good book, studying for her next exam, or watching movies with her parents. She was an A+ student, quiet by nature, and happiest when she blended into the background. But tonight was different. Ella had begged. "Please, Liv. Just this once," she had pleaded for nearly a week. "We're all going. It'll be fun. If you hate it, we'll leave." Tina had agreed immediately, mostly because her boyfriend would be there. The three girls couldn't have been more different, yet somehow their friendship had survived every stage of life. Olivia and Tina had been inseparable since kindergarten. They had shared lunchboxes, birthday parties, scraped knees, and every school memory imaginable. Then, in middle school, Ella had joined their class. Her bubbly personality and fearless confidence had slowly pulled the trio together, and before long, they couldn't imagine life without one another. Now, on the night of Olivia's sixteenth birthday, Ella insisted that celebrating meant doing something unforgettable. Standing on the balcony overlooking the sparkling swimming pool, Olivia wondered why she had agreed. Music echoed through the enormous house as teenagers laughed, danced, and talked over one another. Fairy lights reflected across the water, making the pool shimmer like glass. Someone jumped into the deep end fully clothed, earning cheers from the crowd. Olivia smiled nervously and wrapped her arms around herself. Across the pool, Tina stood laughing in her boyfriend's arms. They looked so comfortable together, as if they had forgotten everyone else existed. Olivia couldn't help wishing she found conversations that easy. She sighed softly, letting the cool evening breeze brush against her face. Then she saw him. Standing near the edge of the pool with a group of football players was Noah. Everyone at school knew who Noah was. Captain of the football team. Friendly to almost everyone. The kind of person teachers respected and students admired. He wasn't just popular because he was athletic—he was the sort of person who could walk into any room and somehow make it brighter. Even from across the yard, Olivia could tell it was him. His blond taper-cut hair caught the glow of the outdoor lights, and his bright blue eyes seemed to sparkle whenever he laughed. Dressed casually in a fitted black T-shirt and jeans, he looked completely at ease while everyone around him hung on every word he said. Without realizing it, Olivia found herself staring. He laughed at something one of his friends said, then slowly turned his head. Straight toward the balcony. Straight toward her. Their eyes met. Time seemed to stop. Olivia's heart skipped so hard she thought everyone around her could hear it. Oh no... He caught me staring. Heat rushed into her cheeks so quickly they burned. She looked away so fast she nearly dropped the cup she was holding. "What are you doing?" she whispered to herself, mortified. Why would Noah ever notice someone like me? She was just a shy junior who spent more time in the library than at football games. She wasn't loud or outgoing like Ella, or naturally confident like Tina. She had never even spoken more than a few words to Noah in the school hallways. To him, she was probably invisible. Still... She couldn't explain why her heart refused to slow down. Taking a steadying breath, Olivia risked one quick glance back toward the pool. Noah was still looking at the balcony. And for the briefest moment... He smiled.
