18. Chapter 15-1

The row of figures had begun to blur, but Jason could not pull himself away from the ledgers that contained the details of his inheritance. What little there was. He’d thought his father kept him short of funds in an attempt to control him. Actually the earl had been rather generous considering the precarious state of their finances. His father had gambled their money away. Not at the gaming table, but on investments and ventures that he had never even hinted at. Jason suspected that the headache that was building behind his eyes was due as much to suppressed rage as eyestrain. The late earl had had a finger in every pie, but apparently no business sense. Every one of his projects had lost money. He shoved the ledger towards the center of the desk and rubbed his head. He needed a drink.
