When Miranda regained consciousness, she was lying on the seat of a closed carriage. Jason sat opposite her. Her head hurt and it took her a moment, as she pushed herself to a sitting position, to remember what had happened. Jason had hit her. “Where are taking me?” she asked, her voice hoarse. It seemed obvious, but she desperately hoped she was wrong. “Gretna Green.” No, not wrong. “Why, Jason? As little as three months ago I would have married you gladly, but you appeared uninterested.
