The road appeared to stretch out endlessly before him. Every muscle in Derek’s body ached and his eyes burned from the dust of the road and lack of sleep. His mouth was dry and tasted like dirt and he’d seen more sheep than ever before in his life. He rode hard, changing horses often and breaking only to query innkeepers and toll booth operators about a suspicious carriage. Most claimed ignorance, but a few had recalled a carriage with curtains drawn and passengers that remained inside. He was on the right track and he knew he had to be close.
