After a restless night, Miranda awoke to a sunny, bright morning. Grace pulled open her curtains and allowed the light to spill into the room, brightening her oval, rose-colored rug and setting the dust motes to twinkling. “It’s a lovely day, my lady,” she said as she set Miranda’s chocolate on the nightstand. “Hmm, I can see that.” Despite feeling out of sorts from lack of sleep, the favorable weather motivated her to counteract the disappointment of the previous evening rather than wallowing in it. Sliding from her bed, she crossed to her writing desk and penned a quick note to Mr. Lang. “Grace, I will wear the white with black polka dots today,” she said. “And please deliver this at once.” She handed the note to her maid.
