The next day, June woke up with a pounding headache and extreme nausea. Slowly opening her eyes, she saw a plate of food and a large glass of orange juice, with a note.
“Please eat and drink something. I had something to attend to but I will return shortly.”
Slowly she sat up and started eating. The food felt good on her stomach and the orange juice helped her headache ease up. Just as she was finishing, Hunter came through the bedroom doors.
“Oh good, you’re awake.” he walked over to the bed. “I’m glad to see you found the food and juice I left for you. How are you feeling?”
“Like shit.” June mumbled, embarrassed from the night before. Despite how much she had drunk, she still remembered everything. “Listen, Hunter, about last night,”
“Don’t worry about it.” he chuckled. “I’m glad you had a good time.”
“No, listen. I’m sorry I got drunk even though you told me not to.” Hunter looked shocked to see the words ‘I’m sorry’ come out of June’s mouth so sincerely. “It won’t happen again. I just ask that we forget what all happened and what all was said.” she looked back down at her empty plate.
“Forget what happened?” he sat on the end of the bed, tilting his head at her.
“Oh f**k off, you know.” she snapped him a look and then sighed. “Me acting like a whiny little girl and standing here in my underwear, for starters.” She hated even thinking about it, much less saying it out loud. Hunter felt himself blushing as he looked down at the sheets and then back up at June.
“Won’t ever mention it.” he assured her, as he made a sealing motion with his fingers across his lips.
“Good. And just so we’re clear,” she lifted a finger and pointed at him, shaking it a few times, “I do NOT like you like that. I barely like you at all.” June tried to act like she still hated Hunter, but he saw right through it.
“Sure thing, sweetheart.” he winked at her, sending her into a rage.
“No, you stop that!” she felt blood rush to her cheeks as he raised his eyebrows at her.
“Stop what, exactly?” he smirked.
“That!” June felt herself blush even harder and jumped up from the bed. “I’m going to shower.” she declared as she stormed off to the bathroom.
“Do you want to bring clothes with you or are you planning to wear mine? I really don’t mind, I was just wondering.” he called out, watching as she stormed back out and back to her room. She returned with a change of clothes and locked herself in his bathroom.
Hunter smiled at the fact that she chose to not use her bathroom to shower. She went all the way to her room to grab clothes and came back so she could use his.
Once she was done, she walked out, her hair hanging down, dampening the lavender gown she had chosen.
“Are you done acting like you don’t at least like me as a friend?” Hunter asked, leaning back against the wall with his arms crossed.
“What did you have to attend to this morning?” she dodged his question.
“Right, that. You don’t get to know about that yet.” she stated.
“Why not?” she demanded. “I mean, after all, we’re-” she froze, thinking of the right word.
“Friends? Well, at least I’ve graduated from being the enemy. Seriously though, you don’t need to worry about it. I have it handled. Now if you were nice to me, then maybe I could spare some minor details.” Hunter rolled his eyes, knowing exactly what he was doing to June.
“I’ll be nice.” she grunted.
“Good girl.” he watched as he felt her heart rate quicken and blood rush to her face. “Let’s just say it has to do with werewolves, vampires, and you.”
“And ME?” June didn’t know which to address first.
“Yes, you.”
“Care to explain?” she threw her arms up in frustration.
“Not really.” he watched as she just stared at him. “Alright, alright, you can stop twisting my arm.” he pushed off the wall and walked over to where June was standing. “The werewolves want you for reasons that I will explain very soon, but as your guardian, I will not let that happen, so don’t worry.”
“What if I want to go with them?” June crossed her arms.
“Trust me, sweetheart, you don’t.” Hunter suddenly became serious. “I-” he stopped himself from saying more. “You can’t go with them. They’re not nice to people like you.”
“Like me?”
Hunter rolled his eyes. He was talking himself into a corner but he couldn’t stop. Finally, he sighed.
“June, just sit down and I’ll explain everything.” He wanted to wait and do it in a nicer setting, maybe in the woods by the stream, or the gardens by the flowers. But this is what he was dealt, so he had to go with it. June sat on the bed, getting comfortable as she felt this was going to take longer than she’d like.
Hunter took a deep breath before starting.
“June, you’re,” he thought, “you’re special. Your parents, or who you know as your parents, aren’t really your mom and dad. Your real mom and dad died, because of the werewolves.”
“Whoa, hold on. What exactly are you saying?” She was more confused than ever, and was eager for answers.
“June, you have powers. Your mom specifically held power greater than anyone has ever known. She passed it down to you. Now the werewolves are once again trying to have their way, and are going to try and take you away.”
“Take me away? Powers? What the f**k are you going on about?”
“June, you’re a witch.” Hunter exclaimed. “A very powerful one at that. When you were younger, there was an attack and your real mom and dad died trying to protect you. The family you grew up with is a friend of your mother’s. The werewolves, they want you because they want that power. If they get their hands on you, they will torture, beat, r**e, and starve you until they either get it, or you die.” He looked over at June who was very overwhelmed with information.
“I’m not a witch.” she finally said, her voice low and plain.
“Yes, you are. With proper training, you could do great things. Your parents hid that life from you so they could try and protect you.”
“And it was working until you kidn*pped me.” she looked up at him, irritated.
“No, I saved your life. The werewolves had already found out about you and were trying to find you themselves. They just don’t hold the same powers as vampires, so they were unsuccessful.” June fell silent. If what Hunter was saying was true, then her whole life was a lie.
“Well, what do we do about this? I don’t particularly want to be tortured and r***d, so we need a plan.”
“I’m already ahead of you. I have the castle witches casting protection spells over the castle so no one can get in without our permission. You start learning how to use your powers today. If we work together, we can put a stop to this.
