Chapter Four: A Card of Possibilities

838 Words
The elevator doors were just about to close when Paige heard hurried footsteps echoing down the marble hallway. “Miss Paige—wait!” Her heart skipped. She quickly wiped her tears with the back of her hand, forcing her expression into something neutral. The last thing she wanted was for Mr. Thomas—the man who had reviewed her proposal—to see her broken. The doors slid open again, and Mr. Thomas stepped inside, slightly out of breath but composed. His presence filled the small space, calm yet commanding. “I’m sorry,” Paige said quickly, her voice trembling but polite. “I didn’t mean for you to see… all that drama earlier. Thank you for taking the time to look at my proposal.” Mr. Thomas studied her for a moment, his gaze steady but kind. “Paige, don’t apologize for being human. Passion often comes with emotion. It tells me you care about your work.” She blinked, surprised by his words. “You… really think so?” He nodded. “I ran through your proposal. It has potential. It needs refinement, yes, but the foundation is strong. You’ve got something worth pursuing.” Paige felt a flicker of hope ignite inside her chest. “I—I don’t know what to say. That means more than you realize.” Mr. Thomas reached into his coat pocket and handed her a sleek calling card. His name embossed in silver letters caught the light. “Here,” he said. “If you’re serious about developing this further, call me. I don’t hand these out lightly.” Her fingers trembled as she accepted it. “Thank you, Mr. Thomas. I promise I won’t waste this chance.” The elevator chimed softly, signaling their floor. As the doors opened, he gave her a small, reassuring smile. “Remember, Paige,” he said, stepping out, “potential is only the beginning. What you do with it—that’s what matters.” She stood frozen, clutching the card like it was a lifeline. For the first time in weeks, the weight of Richard’s harsh words, Clarissa’s cold disdain, and Marissa’s mocking laughter felt lighter. Her father’s voice echoed in her memory: You’ll never make it on your own. But now, another voice rose to meet it—Mr. Thomas’s calm assurance: You’ve got something worth pursuing. Paige inhaled deeply, straightened her shoulders, and whispered to herself, “This is my chance. And I’m not letting it slip away.” The next morning, Paige tucked Mr. Thomas’s card into her bag like a talisman. Every time her fingers brushed against it, she felt steadier, stronger. For the first time in years, she wasn’t just surviving—she had a direction. She hadn’t planned on seeing them. But fate had a cruel sense of humor. As she stepped out of the café near her old neighborhood, she froze. Richard. Clarissa. Marissa. They were walking toward her, perfectly composed as if the years hadn’t changed them. Richard’s suit was crisp, Clarissa’s pearls gleamed, and Marissa’s smirk was as sharp as ever. Paige’s stomach tightened, but she didn’t retreat. Not this time. “Well, well,” Clarissa drawled, her voice dripping with false sweetness. “If it isn’t our runaway girl. Still chasing fantasies, I see.” Marissa laughed, tilting her head. “What’s in the bag, Paige? Another failed dream?” Richard’s eyes narrowed, his tone heavy with authority. “You left this family behind, Paige. Don’t think a few scraps of ambition will change what you are—ungrateful and reckless.” Paige inhaled slowly, her hand brushing the card inside her bag. She straightened her posture, meeting their eyes one by one. “I may have left,” she said evenly, “but I didn’t run from myself. I ran from you.” Clarissa’s smile faltered. Marissa scoffed, but her eyes flickered with unease. Richard’s jaw tightened. Paige continued, her voice steady. “Yesterday, someone who matters saw my work. He gave me his card. He believes I have potential. And unlike you, he didn’t dismiss me before I even tried.” Richard stepped closer, his voice low and sharp. “You think a business card makes you equal to us? You’ll come crawling back when the world chews you up.” Paige didn’t flinch. “No, Father. I’ll rise. And when I do, it won’t be because of you—it’ll be in spite of you.” The silence that followed was heavy, broken only by the distant hum of traffic. Clarissa’s lips pressed into a thin line. Marissa shifted uncomfortably, her bravado cracking. Richard’s glare burned, but Paige held her ground. Finally, she turned away, her steps firm, her heart pounding with defiance. The card in her bag wasn’t just paper—it was proof. Proof that she wasn’t alone, proof that her future was hers to claim. As she walked, she whispered to herself, “This is my beginning. And they can’t take it from me.”
