Nobody must know

Khron turned away abruptly, speaking in a low, clipped voice to the warrior again before storming off down the hall in the opposite direction. I stood there, rooted to the spot, my body numb and my heart screaming. He walked away. My mate saw me, and he walked away. Zamelda whimpered in my head, and I felt her pain echoing through mine. "Why…?" she whispered. But I had no response. Tears stung my eyes, and I blinked them back, forcing my legs to move. I had a job to do. I was still the cleaner, remember? I passed a few pack members on the way to the kitchen, but I didn't hear a word they said. My mind was still reeling. My mate had rejected me without saying a single word. I went about my daily activities that day without the enthusiasm and energy I usually carried. 'What happens now? What if he rejects me? No! Don't think about that. It won't happen. Maybe he was in a bad mood?' These thoughts didn't cease to repeat themselves in my mind. Zamelda was hurt, but she tried her best to reassure me. To make me stop brooding on only negative outcomes. But no matter how much I tried, I couldn't eliminate the thoughts. Even though Khron was my mate, I knew I couldn't simply walk up to him. My heart longed for it, my soul craved it, but reality was far too cruel to permit something so reckless. If I wanted to see him and talk to him, I would need a legitimate reason to justify my being in his presence. But the idea of declaring myself as his mate was completely out of the question. That would only bring me humiliation. By noon, I had arrived at the Pack House's large garage. My task for the day was to clean it from top to bottom, one of the more demanding chores I had been assigned. The garage was enormous, with several vehicles parked inside and plenty of open space. Under normal circumstances, I would never have been assigned work in this part of the building. However, with the coronation only a few days away and the Pack House short on staff, I had been given the responsibility of cleaning it. I was focused on dusting the far end of the garage when Khron's scent reach and flooded my senses with force. My knees weakened, and my fingers shook around the duster I was holding. The scent was impossible to ignore, overwhelming in the most beautiful and agonizing way, bringing with it both comfort and torment at the same time. I turned around slowly, my instincts already telling me what my eyes were about to confirm. Khron stood at the entrance of the garage, every inch of him radiating authority. His eyes were fixed on me with such intensity I had to lower my eyes briefly. Then, without uttering a word, he started walking toward me, and throughout the distance he crossed, his gaze never once left mine. As he moved closer, my heart began to beat like crazy. When he finally stopped in front of me, the expression on his face only increased my confusion. "I finally found my mate, but she turns out to be a weak little Omega," he spoke at last, his voice low, lacking any trace of warmth or gentleness. The words cut through me like a blade. I became angry, because what he knew about me was wrong. I might be an Omega, but I was not weak. Zamelda was anything but weak. She was a silver wolf, a rare gift, a force to contend with. Silver wolves were known not only for their strength but for their connection to magical abilities. I had worth. I had power he couldn't see yet. I needed to say something in my defense. I needed to tell him he was wrong about me. So I opened my mouth and said, "Alpha—" But Khron immediately silenced me. He raised his hand and his tone shifted, now laced with anger. "Who permitted you to speak?" he demanded. My words died in my throat, swallowed by fear. I clamped my mouth shut and looked away, ashamed and humiliated. I knew better than to challenge him now. The moment he said those words, a smile appeared on his face. That smile was the smile of a man who knew he had power and enjoyed displaying it. He stepped closer and I unintentionally held my breath, afraid I'll make him even more mad if I breath wrong. Every nerve in my body went on high alert. I could feel the power radiating off him. He could kill me in an instant if he wanted to. Mate or not. And that terrified me. He reached out and grabbed my chin. Despite the pressure in his hold, my skin erupted in tingles. My body reacted before my mind could catch up. His touch ignited something primal in me, something that belonged to the bond. "How cruel of the Moon Goddess to make my life even more difficult than it already is," Khron muttered, and the words, though not directly meant to hurt, stung nonetheless. He examined my face again, his expression shifting only slightly. "So beautiful," he said slowly, "yet so fragile and completely useless." I barely had a moment to process his words before he closed the distance between us and captured my lips with his. The kiss was anything but gentle. There was no tenderness in it. Itwas possessive and completely overwhelming. My eyes snapped shut as the world around me seemed to disappear. His lips moved against mine with an urgency that should have frightened me, but it only drew me in further. I had never been kissed before, and despite everything that had happened, despite the cruel words he had spoken only moments earlier and the danger surrounding us, my body responded to him without hesitation. This was the moment I had dreamed about for years. I had imagined my first kiss countless times, believing it would be filled with love, acceptance, and the comfort of knowing I belonged. This was nothing like those dreams, yet every part of me still came alive beneath his touch. His hand left my chin and settled at my waist before pulling me closer until there was not the slightest space between us. Slowly, his hand moved along my side, following the gentle curve of my body before coming to rest higher. His touch lingered there for a brief moment. An involuntary moan escaped my lips, and his body instantly went rigid. The hand around my waist tightened instinctively, and for a second, I thought he was about to draw me even closer. But he pulled away instead. He broke the kiss and stepped back, a look of realization resting on his face. His chest rose and fell with uneven breaths, his eyes darting around the surroundings as if he had only just remembered where we were. The garage was an open space where anyone could wander in at any moment. What neither of us realized was that someone already had. We had been so consumed by each other's scent that we failed to notice the newcomer until it was far too late. "f**k!" He cussed under his breath, lustful eyes still lingering on my dazed form. "Nobody must know about this. Nobody, I mean absolutely nobody, must know that you are my mate. Got it?" I stared at him, too stunned to speak. I didn't know whether to dwell on the cruelty in his voice or to hold on to the memory of the kiss. So I nodded instead, three times. "Your mate?" a voice echoed from the entrance, making both of us freeze. The voice belonged to to Eunice, Khron's chosen mate.
